Captain Garret Ramsey crouched atop the sandstone bluff, his rifle clutched in his hands. Forty or more tipis lay spread out along a narrow creek, less than a mile away. The strip of buffalo jerky he'd eaten an hour ago threatened to return to his throat. He'd had one of those dreams last night, the woman dead on the ground, his bullet through her. Two riders bundled in buffalo robes broke from the fray. Garret reloaded and fired his Colt revolver once, twice. One of the bullets struck the rider on the right. His body jerked, and he fell against the mustang's neck, his fur-matted buffalo robe slipping from his neck and shoulders. A cradleboard showed above the hide. Dear God. Garret lowered his gun. Had he shot a baby? And a woman, not a man? The rider tumbled from the saddle. Her long hair splayed behind her. The rider on the left yanked his pinto around. An arrow pinged from his bow, then another. Pain seared through Garret's upper arm as one pierced his flesh. Garret fired. The warrior rocked backward. Red seeped onto his bare, blue-painted chest. A scream rent the air. The female rider who'd been thrown was alive. She clambered to her feet. Garret's horse toppled. He crashed against a gnarled root. His gaze skimmed the pebbled dirt for his revolver. There. He saw it. A second before the woman snatched it from the ground between them. Tears streamed down her grime-covered face as she strangled the grip of the Colt in her right hand and cocked the hammer with her thumb. His mouth went dry. The gun shook. She curled her finger over the trigger, one-handed. Her left hand cradled a doeskin bundle secured to her chest. "Please. Haamee." He scraped for every trace of Comanche in his brain as he rose from his knees, lifting his hands. "Kee." No. She growled at him and aimed at his chest. Her eyes narrowed even as her lips trembled. Dear God. She was going to fire. A howl broke the air — a baby's cry. The woman shuddered. Her finger slipped from the trigger. Horse hooves pounded the limestone. More troopers. They'd shoot her. He lunged at the woman, knocked the gun from her grasp, and carried her with him to the rough ground. Her startled blue eyes stared wide at him out of a face that would have charmed him in a parlor. Blue eyes. At a baby's whimper and movement against his chest, he gasped. Blue eyes and a living, breathing baby, not dead in the cradleboard on her back. "She's a captive," he hollered at the shooter. "White." Out of his reach, she tugged at the doeskin pouch strapped to her front. A little head with thick, dark hair moved above the hide. The mother's voice lifted in a cry that resonated relief, no matter the language. ~~~ ❤️🔥 She was raised to see him as the enemy… but he would risk everything to protect her.
