"You can't say it works miracles!" "Why is it so expensive?" "But olive oil is bad for your skin!" "Beef fat? Gross!" We get a lot of indignant comments on our posts and ads about Velamentum (TM). To clear the air, I wanted to share some of the science and economics behind our 5-ingredient "miracle" cream for anyone who's interested. (This is a long one, so buckle up.) To start, let's take a look at the more than 400 customer reviews and look for patterns. Customers don't simply say they "like" the product, they describe things they can see and feel: -skin feels softer, smoother, and more supple -dryness stays away throughout the day -itching and flaking calm down -other people comment on how good their skin looks A few select reviews: Amazing! "After using for only a few days, I can honestly say that my skin has never felt or looked better. I am so glad I made the purchase. I keep it in the refrigerator, so when I apply it feels great on my skin, especially in this hot summer weather." Awesome skin cream "A little goes a long way. My skin feels moist and supple and does not dry out during the day. That's an amazing feat for someone who's 77 yrs. old!" Itch and flakes GONE! "I am 71 years old and thought nothing could help my dry, itchy, flaking, and wrinkled skin. After only a few days of using Velamentum gone are the symptoms of dryness, itch, and flaking. Unfortunately, the wrinkles are here to stay, but they look better to me and others have commented how good my face looks. I recommend Velamentum to everyone I meet." Velamentum Miracle Skin Cream "Love this cream! It makes my skin feel so soft and like velvet." Admittedly, these sound too good to be true (even miraculous), but there is a very good scientific explanation why people have these experiences. Velamentum is essentially a concentrated lipid veil for the skin. Did you know that "Velamentum" means "veil" in Latin? We did that on purpose. 😀 A conventional skin lotion is basically water, petroleum jelly, and emulsifiers, plus a bunch of preservatives and nasty chemicals to keep bacteria and mold from growing in the water part. (If you have a jar of conventional lotion, look at the ingredients. The main ingredient is usually WATER. That's why they are so cheap per ounce compared to ours. Keep reading their label, and you'll usually see "ALCOHOL and PETROLEUM". After that, nearly everything else on the ingredient list is an emulsifier or preservative. 🤮) Velamentum (TM), on the other hand, has just 5 ingredients: -US sourced grass fed beef tallow -Olive oil -Frankincense essential oil -Lavender essential oil -Rose otto essential oil We really should have called it an "emollient balm" and not a skin cream, but oh well. Beef tallow naturally contains high concentrations of oleic, palmitic, and stearic fatty acids. These types of lipids are excellent at coating, softening, and lubricating the surface of skin, where it can fill in microscopic irregularities between dry surface cells. This explains the "velvet" feeling people so often describe. And when Velamuntum (TM) is applied to slightly damp skin, such as after washing, the lipid-rich balm helps slow water from escaping while simultaneously softening the outer skin surface. Contrast this to a water-heavy lotion that partially evaporates after application and includes preservative and emulsifier chemicals that do not benefit your skin. This means Velamentum (TM) provides better short term and long term surface hydration, with just a tiny pea-sized amount, which is also why we can package it in little 2 oz jars that last for months. The rapid improvement in the appearance of fine lines and pores is also explained by science. When the outer layers of dry skin become better hydrated and the surface becomes smoother, fine creases become less pronounced and light reflects more evenly from the skin. Clinical cosmetic research has repeatedly demonstrated that increased skin hydration can accompany measurable reductions in the visible appearance or volume of wrinkles. The simple explanation is that well-conditioned skin looks younger, and it can do so quickly. The essential oils are another important factor. While there are plenty of anecdotal claims about the benefits of frankincense, lavender, and rose for skin, there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting biological activity from some of these botanicals as well. Frankincense preparations have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and barrier-related activity in experimental models, while lavender has been investigated for wound-healing and inflammatory effects. (Rose has been used for centuries in skincare products, but is difficult to test clinically because it’s so darn expensive.) The limited studies vilifying olive oil have problems. First of all, olive oil has been used in the Mediterranean for skin care for thousands of years without issue. Recent studies, however, suggest that repeated application of straight, 100% olive oil (sourced from a laboratory chemical supply company, not a food-grade olive oil supplier, btw) may cause a weakening of the skin barrier. Our formulation uses between 1% - 10% olive oil, sourced from verified manufacturers. Its role is to soften application and aid absorption of beneficial compounds present in the tallow and essential oils. Bottom line: Velamentum (TM) gives dry skin a rich layer of softening lipids applied over moisture, delivered in a formula that melts beautifully, smells pleasant but not overpowering, and leaves a noticeable smoothness. It's much more expensive to produce than a mass market lotion that's mostly water, petroleum, chemical emulsifiers and preservatives. (Especially that rose oil.) And that's why it costs more. Be sure to let me know if there's another question about Velamentum (TM) or its ingredients you'd like me to answer. And if you're tempted to buy more or try some for the first time...
