In collaboration with Operation HOPE, Inc., we’ve brought no-cost, financial coaching to Charm City through the HOPE Inside program. Here to answer your credit, debt management, savings, and other personal finance questions is Coach Mike Horton. From his time as a high school math teacher to his decades coaching basketball, Coach Mike has a long history of helping others reach their goals. “Most of [my clients] didn’t learn [how to manage money] at home,” he said. “They didn’t learn it in school, and neither did I. Our conversations often start like, ‘I messed up’ or ‘I fell into a trap and now I’m stuck. How do I get out?’ It’s not their fault. They didn’t know.” With rising costs, many who walk into HOPE Inside centers find their finances spread thin. Instead of judgment, Coach Mike offers clients accountability to help them grow in person or virtually. A little progress goes a long way to build momentum toward big changes. “[My clients say], ‘My [credit] score went up five, 10 points, or I was able to eliminate one bill, get rid of one late payment, get rid of one collection account. Then the belief really, really kicks in. The power transfers from, ‘Coach Mike knows everything,’ to, ‘I can do this.’” More than 25,000 people have received one-on-one financial coaching through Wells Fargo HOPE Inside centers, whether they bank with us or not.
