When an athlete says “that was a disaster,” they’re not always asking for an explanation. Sometimes they’re asking: “Am I failing?” “My legs felt dead” is a data report. “I feel so behind” is an emotional signal. “I couldn’t hold the pace” is data. “I don’t know if I can do this” is something else entirely. If you respond to that second type of message with physiology and numbers, you’re not necessarily wrong. You’re just answering a question the athlete didn’t ask. Sometimes the first response needs to be simple: Things are hard right now. That’s OK. This was supposed to be hard. Then the technical explanation can come afterwards. Before opening the workout data, read what the athlete actually wrote and ask yourself what kind of response they need. Sometimes it’s analysis. Sometimes they just need a coach who notices. Our new Claude and ChatGPT integration is ridiculously useful for spotting this stuff too. You could simply ask: “Check my conversations with Cam over the last few months and find any messages where Cam had an emotional response to his training and I didn’t address it.” https://trainingtilt.com/mcp-server-demos
