Chapter 1 Jason Carter, the school's top dog, told me to seduce Alex Shepherd, the golden boy of our campus. He wanted it to happen with everyone watching, so Alex's reputation would be completely trashed. All to knock him off his pedestal and take away his shot at grad school. All to clear the way for his childhood sweetheart, Lily Evans. After a wild night, Jason asked me with red-rimmed eyes, "Did you really sleep with him?" I shoved a stack of photos in his face. "Weren't you the one who made everyone watch?" ***** "Seduce Alex. If you make it happen, you'll get 100 thousand dollars, and I'll get the best doctors for your mom. You know Lily needs that grad school spot. I'll have someone filming from a fixed angle. Just play along," Jason ordered. So, in the classroom, I swallowed my humiliation and perched on Alex's lap, nervously clutching his sleeve. Bathed in sunlight, his sharp, elegant profile and prominent brow bone caught the light. He looked down at me with a deep, almost intoxicating gaze, his long lashes fluttering like moth wings. As I moved closer, I could feel his body tense up in an instant. "You sure you want to do this here?" Alex asked. Lily was Jason's childhood friend. He'd rather drop 100 thousand dollars to have me, his own girlfriend, help Lily get ahead than lend me 100 grand to save my mom. I swallowed the bitterness in my chest and pulled my shirt off my shoulder a bit. "Is that not okay?" I could feel Alex's breathing get heavier and sensed his body responding to me. But he held onto me, restraining himself. "Are you really sure about this?" I gave a soft "mhm" in response. Alex didn't make a move right away. Instead, he took my hand and led me to the hotel across the street from campus. I figured that was it. Jason's crew had probably already snapped the photos they needed. But the moment the door clicked shut, everything changed. Alex, who was always so calm and self-controlled, suddenly grabbed my wrist and pinned me against the wall. His face was burning red as he pressed his lips to mine. He ripped open my clothes, leaving me no chance to change my mind. In the chaos, I grabbed my phone and snapped a few photos, sending them to Jason to show I'd done my part. I could clearly see Alex's profile and his shirtless chest in the shots. These were way more real than anything his crew could've gotten. It was only a grad school spot, nothing more. Alex was born to succeed. He could get into his dream school without anyone's help. By nightfall, everything had calmed down. Alex sat on the couch in his bathrobe. "Break up with him." My head was still spinning. "What?" "You want me to be the side piece?" Of course, I didn't dare. Alex's family was a powerhouse in the capital. But what scared me more than Alex's revenge was not being able to save my mom. "We'll break up," I said. Ever since Jason told me to seduce another guy, I knew it was over between us. Alex didn't press me. "You'd better keep your word. I'm giving you three days. Think it through, then come find me." Before I had time to figure out what he meant, my phone lit up with a message from Jason: [Nice job.] I felt a bitter irony. [Where are you?] I texted back. [The usual spot.] ***** The Loft was the go-to spot for their rich-kid crew. I made my way to the usual private room. The second I opened the door, Lily was straddling Jason's lap, her back facing the door. Neon lights flashed overhead, and the room echoed with raucous jeers and teasing. Jason's solid, muscular build and Lily's petite, supple form were practically melded together. The atmosphere had reached a fever pitch of intimacy. Until someone in the crowd called out, "Hey, Jason's girl." Lily jumped off Jason's lap like she'd been shocked. "Sorry, Iris, we were playing a game." The others chimed in, "Yeah, it's truth or dare. You know Lily. She's been with us since we were kids, no secrets between us. She lost, so she had to pick dare." Jason lounged on the couch, acting like none of this had anything to do with him. That was how he was, never bothered to explain himself. I kept my voice steady. "It's fine. You guys go ahead." The guys nearby looked at me like they'd seen a ghost. Back then, I'd drown my sorrows alone, drinking until Jason had to yank the bottle out of my hands. Or I'd shove Lily out of the way. We fought over her countless times, and every single time, it was me who had to swallow my pride and patch things up with Jason. Everyone thought I was head over heels for Jason. Truth is, I really was. Chapter 2 I walked up to Lily, and she made room for me beside Jason. As I turned my head, I caught sight of a lipstick mark on Jason's face. Jason seemed to notice his reflection in my eyes and instinctively reached up to touch it. "Must've gotten it by accident." I didn't care. "When are you going to transfer the 100 thousand dollars to me?" Jason paused mid-wipe. "So, you're here for the money?" I gave a soft mhm. "You'll have to wait a bit longer." Jason reached out, and someone immediately handed him a cigarette and lit it for him. I dug my nails into my palm, but my voice softened. "Jason, I can't wait any longer." He'd promised to transfer 100 thousand dollars to me once everything was settled. Just then, Lily spoke up softly, "Iris, I know your family's having money troubles, but Jay's money is invested right now. You can't keep hitting him up for cash, especially such a big amount all at once." As soon as she said that, everyone nearby gave me strange looks. Jason took a drag from his cigarette, his voice flat. "Lily's brother is working on a project, and all my spending money for this month went into it." I pushed down the quaking in my heart and compromised instead. "How about transferring it in installments?" He stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray and picked up his phone. "I'll send you 30 thousand dollars first." "Okay." Lily was wearing a diamond bracelet worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Jason had given it to her for her birthday a few days ago. Everyone said he spoiled her rotten. Even when they went out for a meal, the wine alone would cost that much. But when it came to me, he wouldn't spend a penny. Even if I wanted to borrow 30 thousand dollars, he said couples shouldn't have to borrow money from each other. He knew my mom was sick. Still, he made money the stakes, betting I'd do anything, no matter the cost. All this to clear the way for his Princess Lily. The app's notification sound buzzed through the private room. Everyone's eyes were full of disdain, disgust, or a smug indifference. I straightened up, my throat burning, trying to cover up the mess of my broken pride. "I-I'm heading out." Jason's voice was flat. "I'll walk you out." I forced a smile and was about to say no. But Jason was already grabbing his coat and standing up. "Let's go." The car pulled up at the school gate. As I got out, Jason caught sight of the red mark on my neck. "What's that on your neck?" he asked. My mind drifted to Alex biting my collarbone, and I felt my cheeks heat up. "Maybe I got bitten by a mosquito last night." Jason rested one hand on the steering wheel. His brow had that aloof, superior vibe. "Don't you have anything to say to me?" There was a restless tension behind that icy stare. Back then, whenever I saw he was upset, I'd bend over backwards to make him feel better. Now, even opening my mouth felt exhausting. Finally, Jason let out a quiet sigh. "Something happened with the Evans family. I'll get you the money soon." Without waiting for my reply, the car shot away with a roar, as though it carried Jason's fury. That night, a video of me on Alex's lap got posted on the forum. Every private group chat exploded. Judging by the angle, it had to be someone from Jason's circle. And the video was edited on purpose to make it look way more scandalous than it really was, which was worse than I imagined. ***** When I went to find Jason, the door to the private room was left slightly open. His cold voice washed over me like a cold shower, leaving me frozen inside. "Don't worry. With a scandal like this, the Shepherd family's stock is definitely gonna tank. Your Evans family can finally relax a bit." Lily's eyes were swollen from crying. "But what if someone involved actually steps up? I... I can't help worrying." Jason cut in, cool and decisive, "Iris isn't gonna say a word unless she gets paid. Alex can barely keep his own life together right now. No one's gonna mess with your grad school spot." He comforted Lily with forced patience. "So stop crying." The crowd nearby was making a scene. "So what if Jason's got a girlfriend? Nobody's gonna get between him and Princess Lily, right?" "With Jason around, everything's smooth sailing." One of Jason's buddies sitting next to him couldn't help but ask, "But isn't your girl gonna get pissed?" Jason spun his lighter in his hand, looking totally chill. "She won't find out. Besides, she's always pissed at me anyway. Gotta sweet-talk her for a couple of days, and she'll come around." "Yeah, come on, everyone knows she's head over heels for Jason," someone else chimed in. The rich kid lounging at the end of the table snorted, "Seriously, who else could give her all this? She's some poor village girl who clawed her way out of nowhere." The vibe in the room went ice-cold in an instant. Jason's buddy, next to him, gave the guy a hard kick. "Watch your mouth. How could Jason's girl ever be poor?" Jason flicked his lighter, his voice icy. "I don't want to see him here again." Pleading voices echoed through the private room. But deep down, I knew his brief defense was nothing more than a way to save his own face. Chapter 3 My phone buzzed. A critical illness notice for my mom popped up from the hospital. I hesitated for a moment, then knocked on the door. Jason and I left each other some dignity. I didn't go inside. Jason stepped out, clearly annoyed. "What is it?" I held up my phone to him. "Is this your idea, too?" The maliciously edited video was outrageously explicit in its content. Jason's eyes flickered. "Come on, it's not real." People like him were always on top, looking down at everyone else. Why would they care about my reputation? I swallowed hard, forcing myself to speak despite the lump in my throat, "The video's already out, and it's a hit. The grad school recommendation list is about to be re-released. "Can you help me? I'm still short by 90 thousand dollars. Just think of it as me borrowing from you. Jason, you must have a way." Jason's voice was very soft, as if he had just drawn in a gentle breath. "Iris, you're so desperate for money that you'd even agree to seduce someone for the cash?" He was the one who told me to seduce someone, and now he was also the one mocking me for it. "You know my mom's still in the hospital. I'm begging you," I pleaded. Jason leaned against the railing on the second floor, taking his time. "Iris, I'm not repeating myself. Don't push your luck." Turns out, whether I got the money or not was all up to his mood. "Am I not obedient enough?" I asked. Lily's family didn't really need this opportunity. But Lily wanted it, so Jason'd fight for it at all costs, even if it meant sacrificing me. I did whatever he wanted. Isn't that enough? Jason's patience was wearing thin. "Three days. When the video mess is over, I'll figure something out for you." I couldn't wait any longer. But if I kept arguing, I might not have any money for three days. "Okay," I said. ***** I called everyone I knew, but the only one who helped was my college roommate. She lent me a few thousand dollars. None of my relatives was willing to lend me a dime. They said my mom and I were nothing but dead weight. A few thousand dollars wouldn't last me more than a few days. I ended up sleeping on the cold hospital bench. My stomach ached from hunger. My advisor messaged me, saying the school was investigating the forum incident, and I had to take a week off. Those days, I was desperately hustling at part-time gigs off campus. I was dressed in a hostess uniform, standing in the lobby, and greeting guests. Then, a bunch of spoiled rich kids rolled in, all crowding around Lily like she was the queen bee. Lily stopped right in front of me and said, "You. Go fetch me some water." I couldn't say no. There was no way out. They were lounging in the lobby, like they were waiting for someone. I bowed down carefully, like the hotel had trained us, and placed the water on the coffee table. Lily picked up the glass, took a tiny sip, then demanded, "Too cold. I want it piping hot." One of the rich kids next to her gave an awkward laugh. "Lily, want me to get it for you?" "It's fine." I went and poured some steaming hot water, then placed it beside Lily. She reached for it, and I wanted to warn her it was hot, but it was too late. The next second, Lily shrieked, "Ah... It hurts so much." The water spilled everywhere. Everyone jumped to their feet. I barely registered someone rushing past me from behind before I was shoved to the floor. "Did you get burned?" Jason asked. For once, his usually calm voice sounded genuinely worried. Lily shook her head, clutching her red, burning fingertips, tears brimming in her eyes. Jason snapped, "Where's the manager? Didn't you train your staff? Do you know how to do your job? Who taught you how to pour water?" I slowly got to my feet. The manager pulled me over, trying to make me apologize to Jason. "She's new here, a part-timer, doesn't know the ropes yet." Jason turned his head, and when he saw it was me, his anger nearly exploded. "Why are you here?" The manager still had his hand clamped on my arm, dragging me over and demanding I apologize. Jason kicked him aside. Jason fumed, "Is it because I didn't give you enough money? Or did someone else offer you more? So now, if someone told you to take off all your clothes in front of them, you'd do it, huh?" As soon as he said that, everyone around him shot me looks full of disgust. Even Jason himself was staring at me with rage and disappointment. Funny, wasn't it? The guy who used to say he liked me, who used to treat me so well, was now the one humiliating me in front of everyone. Chapter 4 "I can make my own money too," I said, my voice dull. Jason laughed in disbelief, his frustration barely hidden. "Isn't 100 thousand dollars enough for you? To you, making money is betting with me and flirting with the other guy. You don't even care about that scandalous video. "And you didn't bother to deal with it. Alright, let me help you. The school administrators just said they got through to your mom. I bet she doesn't want to see you end up like this for money." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "What did you say?" Lily smirked. "By now, your mom probably knows everything. Can you imagine how disappointed she must be? Her straight-A daughter, doing something like this." My head was buzzing. I felt my whole body go limp, almost losing my balance as I used the coffee table to push myself up. I tore off my ID badge, stumbled toward the door, and jumped into a cab, heading straight for the hospital. My mind was a mess the whole way there. One second, it was Jason, telling me to seduce the guy everyone thought was untouchable. Next, it was my mom's rough, cracked hands and how she scraped together every dollar for my tuition so I could settle down in Capitala City. And finally, her pale, sickly face as she lay in that hospital bed. I braced myself for the worst, my mom screaming, throwing things, accusing me of not respecting myself. But that scene never happened. Instead, she was calm, and she was rarely this clear-headed. "Did I drag you down? Did you have to do something like this to save me?" she asked. I forced myself to steady my racing heart and tried to act composed. "No, Mom, the video was maliciously edited. I didn't do anything." She pressed on. "The school administration said as much, and so did your teacher. They said you're not acting right. Iris, you're a girl!" Back in the day, my mom had gone to college, but life took her to a remote village, and she ended up marrying my dad out of necessity. That was how I came into the world. She was always at the top of her class in high school. But in the remote village, no matter how bright she was, she couldn't become a phoenix unless she was born one. "I didn't, Mom. Please, you have to believe me," I pleaded. She threw off the covers. "I'm not getting treatment anymore, okay? You focus on your studies and never look back." As she spoke, she started pulling the IV needle out of her hand. I completely lost it, crying my heart out. "No, Mom, please don't. If you stop your treatment, what am I supposed to do?" The moment I got close to her, my mom slapped me hard across the face. "I wish I'd never raised a daughter with no sense of shame like you. "I'm living proof of what happens when you make the wrong choices, and you still dare to make the same mistake again? Are you trying to drive me dead with anger?" That night, my mom was sent back to the emergency room again. The doctor gave us a grim warning. Her organs were shutting down. She lay in her hospital bed, looking at me, all that usual toughness gone from her eyes. "The biggest mistake I ever made was following your dad into the poor village and getting trapped there for a lifetime. "I've lived enough. Promise me to live however you want, but never go back there." I was sobbing so hard I could barely speak. "I won't, Mom. I swear I'll never go back for as long as I live." My mom spent her whole life teaching me how to leave the poor village, pouring her heart and soul into me. But when I was ready to take care of her, it was already too late. She closed her eyes, resting peacefully. The heart monitor flatlined. She was stuck back home for two months, and my dad never bothered to get her treated. I finally managed to get her here. But she didn't make it a month. I was useless. Jason rushed over, but it was already the middle of the night. There was a flicker of panic in his eyes. "I just got the report from yesterday. I never thought things would get this bad so fast. I've already asked my uncle to wire the money over." I nodded, not crying, and I couldn't say a word. He crouched down in front of me. "I should've tried to understand more, but you can't keep everything to yourself. Do you realize how much you made me lose face when you said yes in front of everyone that day? "And you're working a part‑time job in a place like that. What will people think of me?" He kept talking, but everything he said turned into white noise. I couldn't hear a single word, just looked up at him and asked, "Jason, we should have broken up." He was the one who said we should be together. And now, with these pathetic words about breaking up and this uncertain love, I held on for three whole years. He froze for a moment, like he couldn't believe what he was hearing. "What did you say?" I said quietly, "I assumed that when you told me to go after someone else, we had already implicitly broken up." -------------------------------------------------- There are limited chapters to put here, click “learn more” to open App to continue reading (It will automatically jump to the book)
