Pic 2 of (ETCH co-founder) Jason was taken in October 2017 after he’d just finished running a half marathon in Beaune, France. The prize for finishing the race was a bottle of wine. 🙄 ⁠ Jason had been working (in his dream role) for a large French family wine business and was really enjoying the job and getting to know the team, while on a trip to France. While he stayed physically fit, his mental health was really suffering at this time. He knew his alcohol consumption was creeping up on him... and after many attempts at moderation he acknowledged that something had to change. He just didn’t know how. After 23 years working in the wine industry it was all he knew. it was his life, his friendship circle and our family’s financial security. ⁠ ⁠ Life has a funny way of slapping you in the face and forcing you to change paths and that’s just what happened to Jason....⁠(although this felt more like a king hit 👊🏼) ⁠ A couple of months after this photo in France was taken, Jason ended up in an alcohol rehab facility where he was given the space and the tools to help him to break from the cycle. Running has always been a part of Jason’s life, it formed a very important part of his healing journey and continues to keep his mental and physical health on track.⁠ (Some may say Jason has swapped one addiction for another, but we are good with that! 😉) While removing alcohol from his life didn’t fix all of life’s problems, it gave Jason half a chance of dealing with them. With time & work all aspects of his life had drastically improved…his physical health and his mental health. ⁠ Today Jason competed in the Australian Masters Athletics Championships in the men’s 5000m, beating his PB by 10 seconds and coming 3rd in his age group (over 50’s). 🎉🏆️ This post isn’t to gloat about results or how great life can be when we remove alcohol (even though this was true for Jason), but to offer hope to others who may be struggling with their life journey and to share that there is hope for brighter days to come, even when at times it doesn’t feel like it.
