“No one knows who the f*©k Steven Daar is.” - Tucker Max Yes….that is a real quote. Those words came out of Tucker’s mouth while he was on stage in front of 300+ people giving a talk about self publishing. After his talk, he opened up for Q&A from the audience. I took the opportunity to ask him how I could better leverage my book ‘Profit Hacking’ to get more clients for my business. When I asked my question, I had a copy of ‘Profit Hacking’ in hand. Tucker asked if he could see it. I handed it over. He looked at it and said: “I know this book….I have a copy of it in my office” [I had hosted a mini-mastermind dinner a few months earlier and gifted a copy to everyone who attended... One of the people there was Tucker's business partner, Zach] He compliment the cover, title, and subtitle…. Then he remembered he was Tucker Max. And he had hit his quota of nice things to say. So he followed that up with this: “The truth is, you wrote one book and did a decent job with it. But nobody knows who the f*©k Steven Daar is. And it’s up to you as to whether you’re going to do something about that….or not. The more you choose and decide to do about that, the more clients you’ll get….and the more they’ll be willing to pay you higher rates.” At the time, I thought he meant "get famous"... Play the “Staar” role: Write more books. Build a social media following. Get featured on bigger platforms. And it was exhausting as hell. It took me to the edge of burnout before I realized I had it completely backwards: I was trying to be known by EVERYONE... Instead of being invaluable to the RIGHT people. So I stopped chasing the spotlight. And started focusing on the person right in front of me. My next client call? I showed up like THEIR success was the only thing that mattered. My next project? I treated it like my reputation depended on it. Funny thing happened when I started showing up like that.... The quality of people I worked with transformed completely. Top players in business, marketing, health, financial publishing. The work got more interesting. The money got WAY better. A few years after Tucker "roasted" me on stage? I co-wrote a book with a client. And the book ended up being personally edited by Tucker Max himself. Full circle? Maybe. But here's what really happened... I stopped trying to be famous. Started trying to be useful. Because Tucker was right about one thing... Nobody knew who the f*©k I was. But he was wrong about what I needed to do about it. You don't need a million followers to make serious money. You just need the RIGHT people to know you can solve their problems. And when you truly deliver for someone? Word gets out. Fast. Here's what I learned about money and influence: It doesn't come from followers. It doesn't come from having some blue checkmark. Money comes from other people's bank accounts. And for any sale to happen, you only need ONE buyer and ONE seller. The more valuable you are to that ONE person... The bigger the deal gets. But it only happens when they believe you can solve their problems. The truth? Most people still don't know who I am. But a lot of the RIGHT people do. People who value what I have to offer. And that's all that matters. Want more people to know who the f*©k YOU are? Start with the person right in front of you.
