Since last year, people asking AI like ChatGPT who to hire went from 6% to 45%. Here's how to get your business recommended. I'm Shane, and I've studied 520 small businesses in 2026 to see how Google and ChatGPT decide who to recommend. Here's where those numbers come from. BrightLocal asks over 1,000 Americans every year how they find local businesses. In 2025, 6% said they'd asked an AI tool like ChatGPT to recommend one. In 2026, it was 45%. AI is now the third place people go to find a local business, right behind Google and Facebook. It's already ahead of Yelp. The biggest group is people aged 30 to 44. 64% of them asked AI for a business recommendation in the last year. Here's the part most owners miss. When someone asks ChatGPT for a plumber, it doesn't hand them 10 websites. It gives a short list, often just 3 to 5 names. Either you're on that list, or your competitor is. Right now, most small businesses aren't on it yet. Researchers ran about 4,950 patient-style questions through ChatGPT. They picked 200 independent medical practices at random, and it didn't mention a single one of them. So in most towns, those 3 to 5 spots are still up for grabs. Try it for yourself. Ask ChatGPT who's the best at what you do in your town, and see who it recommends. πŸ€” So what decides who makes the list? It recommends the business it can read the most about for the EXACT thing someone asked. Say someone in Naperville asks ChatGPT who installs tankless water heaters. It looks for a business that has written about exactly that, in exactly that town. If your website is a homepage, a services page and a contact form, it has nothing to go on. So it picks whoever does. What gets you picked is simple: a page for each job you do, in each town you work in. For the plumber, that's a page called "Tankless water heater installation in Naperville." Google's own help page says it picks local businesses on 3 things: πŸ“ Distance: how close you are to the person searching. ⭐ Prominence: how well known you are, like your reviews and other websites that mention you. 🎯 Relevance: how well your business matches what the person typed. You can't move your business closer, and reviews take time to build. But you can change relevance this week. So if someone types "who installs tankless water heaters in Naperville", you need a page that's the closest match there is. Here's the catch. A plumber with 8 services in 10 towns needs 80 pages. Every one of those pages has to be a real job you do, in a town you actually work in, written in your own voice. If each page takes 2 hours to research and write, that's 160 hours. Nobody running a business has that kind of time. This is where AI agents come in. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude, an AI agent doesn't wait for you to ask. It works on its own, 24 hours a day. For example, you could set up AI agents to do each of these jobs: 1️⃣ A researcher that reads your website, your services and the towns you work in, then reads every competitor's website near you. 2️⃣ A strategist that finds the jobs and towns your competitors have no page for, and plans which page to write first. 3️⃣ A writer that writes each page in your business's own voice. 4️⃣ An editor that checks each page against Google and ChatGPT's best practices. 5️⃣ A publisher that puts it on your website. That's a 5-person marketing team, working every day, for a fraction of the cost. You might be wondering, doesn't Google punish AI writing? Only when it's low quality, spammy AI slop. Google's own words: "Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines." But if an AI agent properly researches your services, your industry, your competitors and your town, it can write pages that are genuinely useful to your customers. Google says that's the kind of content it wants. That's why we built Springso. It's an AI agent that does all five of those jobs, for 20x less than hiring that team. It runs 24 hours a day with one goal: getting your business found and recommended on Google, Maps and AI search. Here's one night of Springso for the plumber: πŸ• 1:10 am. Read the websites of 12 other plumbers near Naperville. Listed every job and town they cover. πŸ• 1:42 am. None of them has a page on tankless water heaters in Naperville. Put it first. πŸ•‘ 2:15 am. Wrote the page, answering what people ask before they call. πŸ•’ 3:20 am. Checked it and put it up on his website. The next night, it writes the next job and town on the list. Unlike ads, these pages don't disappear the day you stop paying. They stay on your website. Setup takes about 60 seconds, and you can approve every page before it goes up. If you've ever paid an SEO agency $1,500 a month and only got silly monthly reports back, you don't have to take my word for any of this. Here's the deal. Type in your website and you'll get a free 30-day content plan. You'll see the exact pages it would write for you. If you like it, it's $1 to start publishing. After that it's only $99 a month. No contract. Cancel with a click. πŸ‘‰ https://springso.com/start-seo The 45% isn't going back down. Next time someone near you asks AI who to hire, give it a reason to say you.
