THE REAL FOUNDATION OF MENTAL WELLNESS: IT'S NOT A PILL, IT'S THE PERSON AND THE COMMUNITY STRUCKTURES #cchrafrica #mentalwellness #community #healthyliving #nature I’ve been reflecting on the overwhelming global statistics around mental health, and I believe based on a lot of research of over a decade it’s time we focus on a radical, non-invasive truth: We cannot cure spiritual and emotional pain with dangerous drugs or a flawed medical model that leaves people worse off. Mental distress is not just a chemical imbalance; it's a signal. It tells us we are disconnected from what truly sustains us as human beings. The path to healing and recovery lies not in quick fixes, but in holistic self-rebuilding and support. THIS IS WHAT TRUE HEALING LOOKS LIKE: The Fundamentals: Prioritise your basic human needs. This means committing to healthy eating (what we put in our bodies matters!), getting 7-8 hours of good quality sleep, and embracing exercise to heal the mind-body connection. The Boundaries: Create space and time for yourself to reduce stress. Stop the constant feed of negativity—spend less time on your phone and take a break from the anxiety-selling news cycle. The Connection: We heal through genuine connection. Talk to people about your problems. Build up your community and reduce isolation. The Deep Healing: We must honour our roots. For many in South Africa, this involves turning to powerful, non-invasive methods like those used by the African churches and traditional healers. These approaches recognise that problems are often spiritual, communal, or trauma-based, and they focus on building the person up so they can find and deal with the underlying issues that need healing instead of masking it with a pill, that in the long run creates terrible side effects, more medication, mental difficulty and physical pain and discomfort to say the least. Our ultimate goal is not management with medication, but empowerment. It’s time to shift power back to the individual and their community by pushing for alternative treatments that actually work and ensure people live a happier and healthy life.
