Good morning, #HistoryCommunity! Ever wonder what it looked like in #roanokeva back in 1874? The town of Big Lick was officially chartered in 1874, and then renamed to Roanoke in 1882, then registered as an independent city in 1884. It was full of beautiful pastures, fields of tall grasses, and abundant wildlife. Homes were spread out and the population was only around 500. In the 1880s, when the #railroad was built, it boomed- going from a quaint little village to a full blown city, with a population of over 16K by 1890. This photo, taken around 1874, is described as "Ellis Club looking towards Ponce de Leon/ Big Lick" The photo shows a large, dark field interrupted by a fence with houses and other buildings in the distance and a tree standing next to a barn. The back of the photo says that "picture taken from rear of Ellis Club looking toward Ponce De Leon (Trout House) 1874" and "Big Lick in 1874". Also, Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Here is a newspaper from The Big Lick News dated September 22, 1877. #biglickhistoricalarchives #virginahistory #appalachia #magiccity #Virginia #ephemera #countryroads #biglickva #rurallife #ruralhistory #nostalgia #oldnewspapers
