There are images that don’t ask for noise. They ask only for that heavy kind of silence, the one in which you suddenly feel your heart weigh a little more than usual. That’s how she appeared on our screens: an old dog, in a field that led nowhere, with the wind passing through her dirty fur as if it were counting the last steps of a life lived too long in loneliness. She dragged behind her a tumor as heavy as an ancient burden. A mass of suffering pulling her closer to the ground with every step. She struggled to breathe, her abdomen swollen with fluid, and yet, in her eyes, there was something impossible to ignore: a fragile way of asking for just one more day. We don’t know who left her there. Maybe someone who never truly looked at her. Maybe someone for whom old age no longer means life, only waste. We only know she was abandoned like a broken object, when in truth, she was an entire story. Alexandru Papp went to find her. The way you go toward someone you love: with slow steps, with trembling knees, with a quiet prayer whispered inside, so as not to frighten a heart that has been afraid its whole life. He found her there, at the edge of the world, in that place where animals lay their heads on their paws not to rest, but to give up. He lifted her gently. And without words, he told her: “This is not where your story ends.” He brought her to us. Now she sleeps in a bed. She breathes with difficulty, but she is safe. And for the first time in a long while, she is not alone. We don’t know if we will be able to defeat everything that has gathered in her body. But we do know this: we will not let this old age fade away in a field, in dust, in indifference.
