Ad text

In the third year after her parents and younger sister had supposedly died in an explosion that ripped through their protected convoy, Mavis found a security video on her husband Killian’s computer. In the video, the parents and sister she had mourned for three years were sitting in a safe house, eating lunch. Mavis went to find him at once. He was in the study with her brother, Aidan, both of them in dark suits, reviewing the port rotation schedule. When she finished, Killian paused. He looked as though a great weight had finally been lifted from his shoulders. “So you saw it.” … “It’s better this way.” Killian closed the file. “For three years, I’ve had to pretend. I’ve had to act as if that explosion was real. I’m tired of it, too.” Aidan, their father’s deputy and the designated heir, stood on the other side of the desk. “We lied to you, but we had our reasons.” “Three years ago, Mother received an internal threat report from an informant. It claimed you would betray your sister’s location during the family’s relocation, leading to her death.” “At first, we didn’t believe it. But then the report’s predictions started coming true, one by one. You lost her at the music festival. You pushed her down the stairs. After graduation, you were the one who suggested a family road trip and asked for the convoy’s route.” Aidan looked at her, his voice flat and cold. “Leaking the location of a protected family member isn’t a sibling squabble, Mavis. It’s betrayal.” “We couldn’t wait for your sister to actually die before we took action. Father approved a staged attack so they could go off the grid and assume new identities. Everyone who knew the truth was ordered to remain silent.” “You were left with Killian, under observation, until we were certain you wouldn’t betray the Family again.” Mavis stood there, reeling. One was her brother. The other was her husband of three years, the man she had loved with her whole heart. Seeing her shoulders tremble, Killian crossed the room and pulled her into his arms. Outside the door, the guards remained at their posts. “It’s all right.” His voice softened. “We’ve watched you these past three years. I believe you understand the price of betrayal now. You won’t hurt your sister again.” “I’ll give you some time to process this.” Killian released her. “Today is her birthday. It’s also the day her Family protection is officially restored.” Aidan placed a key on the desk. “I’ve sent you the address of the new safe house. Come when you’re ready.” Killian gave Mavis a light pat on the back before leaving with Aidan. Mavis remained frozen, her gaze fixed on the key, long after they were gone. Three years ago, she had just completed her research in systems engineering and suggested a family road trip across the country. Their convoy was attacked on the highway. After the lead car exploded, the fire swallowed the road. There were supposed to have been four people in that car. Her parents and her sister, Stella, vanished. The official story was that they were dead, though no bodies were recovered. Mavis was the only survivor found at the scene. In the aftermath, she had shattered more than once. Every day, regret was a physical weight, crushing the air from her lungs. Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw the flames, saw her family burning alive. She couldn’t sleep through the night, subsisting on a cocktail of alcohol and sleeping pills. Reporters hounded her, demanding to know how the route had been leaked. Allied Families whispered that she had sold them out to the enemy. She kept her head down and said nothing. She accepted Aidan’s coldness and Killian’s disappointment as her due. The Ricci Family stripped her of all internal access. Online, the world called her a traitor. Eventually, she came to believe it herself. Every day, she apologized to their photographs, until the guilt hollowed her out, leaving only severe depression and PTSD. After one breakdown too ......
