Unless we become like little children, we can never really know who we are beyond all the lies the world has taught us about ourselves. And unless children see themselves without the judgment of the world, they will never experience the true wonder of who they are. When I was six years old, I was sent to a boarding school just like all the kids of missionaries overseas. The experience left me broken. My whole life since has been one long search for acceptance and unconditional love in the face of that abandonment. As a father to children, including my daughter Kara, I had no idea how to accept, much less offer, the kind of love I was seeking. I clearly remember an experience I had with Kara when she was about ten. She’d done something that frustrated me, so I marched her to her room and offered her harsh words of ‘wisdom.’ She dissolved into sobs. But leaving her room, I felt like death. I hadn't acted out of the unconditional love I myself was seeking, but in frustration. So I rushed back to her room, dropped to one knee and begged her forgiveness. It was the beginning of a shift in my view of my own search for love. My point isn’t to question parenting styles, but to share how we as parents often act out of our own deficits rather than love. Kara and I have come a long way since that day. It was in the desire to discover that kind of love that Kara and I dove into writing The Dream Travelers Quest together, a story about a grade-school boy who is being bullied at school and finds himself sucked into another world where he goes on a quest to discover just how valuable he is. Kara is now a teacher, and I don’t think I know anyone who has such a heart for children, just as they are, without condemnation. It’s amazing to see. I hope you and your children will join us on the adventures of Theo and Annelie as they discover the true nature of love and overcome fear with love.
