This week, we launched my newest instructional video: “Jiu-Jitsu For Old Guys: Guard Retention.” Having good guard retention can be the difference between a good grappler and a bad grappler. When you’re playing guard and don’t trust your guard retention, you usually don’t have the peace of mind needed to think about your next move. You’re constantly in “danger mode,” and every guard passing attempt from your opponent becomes a nightmare to defend. When I used to compete, guard retention was always one of the areas I focused on the most when playing from the bottom. If you have solid guard retention, you don’t have to worry—you can stay calm and focus purely on your offensive game. In this instructional, I share my favorite guard retention techniques against all types of guard passing: toreando pass, stack pass, over-under pass, leg drag, knee cut, folding pass, and more. Not only that—I also show how to connect your defensive movements to your favorite attacks. My goal was to give you at least one reliable way to retain guard against every major type of pass. Once you can trust your guard, you can focus entirely on attacking and winning. I hope you all enjoy this instructional video!
