Katie Schaffer doesn’t have time for fairy tales. Between late nights behind the bar, raising her spirited young son, and holding together a life that’s already been shaken by loss and divorce, she’s learned one hard truth: the only person she can depend on is herself. Love is a luxury she can’t afford. But small towns don’t let you hide forever. When a steady, patient man steps into her world, Katie finds herself facing something far more terrifying than heartbreak—hope. He isn’t intimidated by her responsibilities. He doesn’t flinch at her sharp edges. And he refuses to walk away when she pushes. For the first time in years, someone sees beyond the exhausted single mother and recognizes the woman who’s tired of carrying everything alone. Falling in love would be risky. Letting someone become part of her son’s life would be everything. Now Katie must decide whether protecting her heart is worth losing the one man willing to stand beside her through every messy, beautiful piece of it. Because sometimes strength isn’t about surviving on your own. Sometimes it’s about letting someone stay. EXCERPT... We hadn’t gone far when we heard hoof beats coming up behind us. Reining the horses in, we turned to find David riding at a pretty good clip. As he pulled to a stop, a frown passed quickly over Jake’s face. “What are you doing here?” David smiled and rocked back in his saddle as he pushed up the front of his hat with his forefinger. “Heard you and Katie were out for a ride and thought I’d join ya, is all. You don’t look real happy to see me, big brother.” The statement hung in the air as David turned and flashed me a dazzling smile. “Hello, Katie. Good to see you again.” I flinched slightly as goosebumps skittered up my spine. “Hello, David. Good to see you too.” Must be something about that family smile. Stupid girl. “Met your son, Dustin, back at the ranch. Handsome young man…polite, too.” David held out his fist, knuckles down. “He said to give you this.” I held my hand out, palm up, and he dropped a red rock into my hand. When I looked up, he was still smiling. “He said he found it out behind the barn this morning and Roy told him red rocks were always good luck. He wanted you to have it so you didn’t fall off the horse and get hurt.” I laughed as I looked from David back to the red rock in the palm of my hand. “He said to bring it back, though, because he’ll need it later.” “Oh, of course.” Feeling playful, I looked from David to Jake as I asked, “But what are you two going to do for luck? Shouldn’t you have red rocks too?” Jake didn’t seem amused, but David dug in his pocket and pulled out another rock. “Well, he only had two of these special red rocks, but he did send the other one along. He suggested Jake and I share it.” Grinning, he tossed the second rock to Jake. “Here, big brother. I’m feeling lucky today.” Jake caught the rock, but sent David a scathing look. “Katie and I were about to find a quiet spot for a picnic lunch." David acted like he hadn’t heard the warning note in Jake’s voice making it clear he wasn’t invited. “Hey, a picnic sounds like a great idea. Count me in!” I almost laughed as David tried his best to look innocent while Jake shot him a murderously dark look. For some reason, David seemed bent on tagging along and it didn’t look like he’d be easily dissuaded. I was okay with it, as long as things didn’t turn ugly. David was fun and it would keep things with Jake from getting too intimate. There was still something niggling at the back of my brain that all was not as it appeared, so slow was good. “Okay, boys, let’s go.” Hoping to head off an ugly confrontation, I turned Cody back in the direction we’d been headed and touched my heels to his ribs.
