When I started writing on Substack four years ago, I was writing about traveling across the United States for an extended period in a travel trailer. Every post was real time, the focus was on tiny living in a trailer and adventures in midlife, as well as finding a new home in a time of climate disruption. Well, we found our home at the end of that quest, settled in, and I was unsure how to proceed with the newsletter. As an experiment, since my main way of making a living is as a fiction writer, I decided to serially post my next cozy mystery on Substack. It turned out, people liked that, and the affirmation of their responses kept me coming to the page at a time when I was struggling to be motivated. The market was just beginning to be flooded with AI , which has made it harder than ever to make any sort of living as a writer of fiction. Meanwhile, my Substack continued to grow slowly and feel like an authentic and nurturing place to read and write, a thoughtful corner of the Internet that was replacing, for me, time and energy spent on other social media platforms. However, that didn't address the need I had to write creative nonfiction, exploring my own life as a source of material. Once again I followed my intuition, this time beginning a new series on Substack called Cozy Living. All of a sudden I was energized. Cozy living was a place where I could explore and dig deep into all the things that mattered to me: psychology, wellness, creativity, homemaking, healing the body, mind, and spirit, creating a life that is satisfying, rich, and meaningful.
