NAVAGRAHAS Last week, we explored the Navagrahas in a collective composition accompanied by their respective Śaktis. This week, we turn our attention to the grahas themselves, studying their individual iconographic forms. While the Navagrahas are often approached through astrology, temple sculpture presents them as distinct anthropomorphic deities, each with prescribed attributes, vāhanas, postures, weapons, and identifying markers. From Sūrya holding lotuses and framed by a radiant halo, to Rāhu’s leonine face and serpentine form, and Ketu’s serpent head and human body, each graha possesses a clearly defined visual vocabulary. This visual study examines the Navagrahas in their solitary depictions, focusing on form, attributes, and iconographic identity as described in the śilpa and āgamic traditions. •••———— 5MM ICONOGRAPHY Series : POSTS that focus on detailed ICONOGRAPHY of divinities.
