Is it true your cleaning products can contain cancer-causing chemicals? Well, yes and no. Here's the yes. Formaldehyde is classified as a known carcinogen. Nobody adds it, but certain preservatives release it slowly. Some phthalates are classified as possible carcinogens; others are used in fragrance to make it last, and because the word "fragrance" doesn't have to name anything, you can't tell which one is in yours, or whether one is. And 1,4-dioxane, another possible carcinogen, isn't an ingredient at all. It's a trace left behind by manufacturing. So yes. That's all real. Now the no. Bacon is classified as a carcinogen too, in the same group as formaldehyde, and nobody's panicking about a bacon sandwich. Classified means it can cause cancer under some conditions. It doesn't tell you what a trace of it in a wash does to you, and nobody has run a forty-year study on laundry detergent. Anyone who tells you your detergent gives you cancer is guessing. So is anyone who tells you it definitely doesn't. I'm Charlie. I run Dip. I didn't fancy waiting forty years to find out, so we started again. It took three years and most of it went badly. What came out of it: no formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, no DEA, a fragrance our suppliers confirm in writing has no phthalates in it, and twelve ingredients all printed on the box. Where one isn't plant-derived, our chemist checks it before it goes in. They clean properly too, which took the longest. Tear a corner off for a stain, or drop a sheet in the drum. £0.24 a wash on the biggest box. If you'd rather not wait for the science either, your first order is 50% off: £6.00 for 30 washes, then £12.00 a month + £3.95 delivery. If it doesn't work, we refund you.
