The sight in front of me was simply adorable. Beckett was carrying the world’s smallest baby on his chest. Or perhaps she looked tiny because Beckett was huge. I’d only seen him in dress shirts before, but now he had a simple white T-shirt on. It wasn’t covering his arms, revealing his impressive biceps. He looked even more disheveled than the last time I’d seen him, with dark rings under his eyes and his hair all over the place. And yet his appeal was through the roof. “Piper, thanks for coming here.” “Sure!” Emotion clogged my throat as I looked at the cute bundle in his arms. After closing the front door, I took off my shoes and followed him through the penthouse. “By the way, I bought a rattle for the baby. Just a little something,” I said, feeling awkward. But Beckett responded kindly, and that made me feel good. “That’s very thoughtful of you.” “Where would you like me to put it?” “How about on that ottoman next to you. I’ll bring it upstairs later.” As I placed it where he suggested, he exclaimed, “Everything’s such a mess!” The place was gorgeous and huge, and yes, somewhat discombobulated. Several corners were a bit cluttered with baby stuff, but so what? “Hey, you’ve got a tiny human to take care of. Obviously part of this home is going to have a tiny human aesthetic.” Beckett started to laugh, making his whole chest move. For a brief second, I thought the baby would wake up, but nope. He grinned as if reading my thoughts. “Don’t worry. If I carry her, she sleeps like an angel no matter what I do. The problem starts when I put her down.” “I see.” “One of my grandmothers was here today—she’s been helping out while I search for a nanny. But Charlotte only wants me.” “You are her dad,” I said. He looked so cute with the baby. “Do you want a drink?” “You can just tell me where stuff is.” “Don’t worry. I’ve become very proficient at doing things with one hand.” I nodded. “I bet you have.” “What can I tempt you with? I’ve got a fully stocked bar.” “What are you having?” I asked. “Coffee.” I pressed my lips together. He laughed. “Don’t judge. Life with a newborn is strange. She slept so much during the day that I’m prepping for a night of activity.” “Then I’ll have a coffee with you. It doesn’t really affect me, unfortunately. Or fortunately. Depends how you look at it.” “All right.” I glanced around the room. “Where can I put my laptop?” “On the dining table.” He nodded in that direction. “We’ll review everything there.” I deposited it on one corner and followed him to the kitchen. The baby started to fuss in his arms, and he used both hands to hold her in front of him, jiggling her lightly. She immediately quieted down again. “That’s a neat trick!” He looked at me with the most devastating smile. You can’t find him attractive just because he’s a dad. That’s just odd. Well… not just because he was a dad, but because he was hot too. Hot man plus baby in his arms equaled irresistible appeal. Yep, odd. He grinned. “YouTube is my new best friend.” “I love YouTube, not just from a marketing perspective, but for my personal use as well. If you tell me all the steps, I can make the coffee.” He had one of those complicated coffee machines that required some work. Since I wasn’t much of a coffee drinker, I had no clue what to do. “Or,” I began, and emotion clogged my throat again, “I can hold Charlotte if you want.” Beckett’s eyes bulged. “Are you sure?” I nodded. “Yes. I love babies. I’d say I’m not bad with them. My friends have lots and lots of babies. I’ve had baby fever since I was twenty-five, though it’s subsided somewhat now that I’m thirty.” I just said that out loud? Jeez. I winced. “Whoops. That’s way too much information. Sorry.” “No judgment,” he chuckled, then glanced down at Charlotte. “We can try, but she might fuss.” “I don’t mind.” “All right, then. If you have so much experience, have a go.” He very carefully deposited Charlotte into my arms. “Her head…” “I got her. Did I mention that I love babies?” I whispered to him. “Oh, she’s so adorable. She’s the prettiest girl ever.” “I know, right?” I swear he pushed his chest out with pride. Oh, it was endearing to see him so proud of his little girl. Then I focused on the baby. “Hey, Charlotte. I’m Piper.” I stroked her forehead down to her nose with my thumb and then back up, moving to her right eyebrow. “Wait, I know that move. I’ve seen it in some videos.” I started to laugh. “Yup. My cousins have trained me well.” Charlotte was fussing a little, but after three strokes of her eyebrow, she seemed to fall asleep. I glanced up at Beckett, who was staring at his girl with wide eyes. “I have to remember that. Can you do it again?” I laughed. “I will if she wakes up.” “Want me to take her from you again?” “No!” I was feeling suddenly very territorial of this little gem in my arms. “She might wake up,” I added quickly. “All right, then I’ll make the coffee. Who knows how much time we have.”
