During Samudra Manthan, the Devas and Asuras churned the cosmic ocean seeking Amrita. Among them was Swarbhanu. Disguised among the Devas, he sat between Surya Dev and Chandra Dev and drank the Nectar of Immortality. Recognizing the deception, Surya Dev and Chandra Dev informed Lord Vishnu. Instantly Lord Vishnu released Sudarshana Chakra. The divine discus severed Swarbhanu's head. Yet because the Nectar had already touched him, death was impossible. The head became Rahu. The body became Ketu. Thus began the eternal eclipse cycle. Rahu remembers desire. Ketu remembers liberation. Rahu seeks experience. Ketu seeks transcendence.
