Madie recognised subtle red flags during a routine conversation with a customer and, instead of rushing or judging, she slowed things down. She listened. She created a safe, private space. And she gently helped the customer see what was really happening - that the person they believed they were in a relationship with was using stolen photos and convincing stories to manipulate them into sending money through gift cards. Romance scams are devastating because they prey on trust and emotional connection. It took time, multiple conversations, and immense empathy before the customer could accept the truth. Throughout it all, Madie stayed patient, supportive, and focused on the customer’s wellbeing - helping put safeguards in place and preventing further harm. The result? A customer who still visits the branch, reassured and supported, and is no longer sending money to a scammer. This is what care looks like. This is what protection looks like.
