The nail varnish is in the bathroom cabinet. Third shelf. Next to the cotton wool and the remover. There are seven bottles. I counted once. Seven bottles because I kept replacing the ones that didn't last, or buying a slightly different shade thinking it might be the colour that was the problem, or picking up a new "long-wear" formula at the chemist because the label said chip-resistant and I believed it. They all chip by Wednesday. Sunday evening. That's when I do them. Everything settled, kids in bed, twenty minutes of sitting still with my hands out like I'm surrendering. Base coat. Two layers. Top coat. Another ten minutes waiting because I always catch one before it's properly dry. Then bed, carefully. Then Monday, fine. Tuesday, fine. Wednesday morning — there it is. The corner of the ring finger. Then the index. By Thursday they look like I've been working on a building site. I've done this for years. Every week. The same routine, the same result. I tried gel at the salon. It lasted better — two, sometimes three weeks — but I'd come out two hours later and £45 lighter, and half the time the removal left my nails feeling paper-thin for days. I went back to the cabinet and the seven bottles. A woman in a Facebook group mentioned gel nail wraps. Not press-ons — she made that distinction clearly. Semi-cured gel, applied at home, that you cure under a small lamp. She said hers had lasted nearly three weeks through gardening, swimming, and two weeks of washing up without gloves because she'd run out and kept forgetting to buy more. I was sceptical. I've been sceptical of every "long-wear" claim for about ten years. But I tried Hello Nails anyway. Ordered on a Sunday. Applied that evening, same time slot I'd always used for the varnish. Day three, I checked them the way I always check — looking for the corner chip on the ring finger. Nothing. Day five. Still nothing. Shiny. Actually shiny, the way they look when you first apply varnish and you think maybe this time will be different. Day eight, I put a new kitchen shelf up. Drilled into the wall. Used my hands in a way that would have had the varnish in pieces by the end of it. Checked afterwards. One small scuff on the thumb that polished out when I ran my finger over it. Day twelve, I stopped checking. Not because I'd forgotten — because there was nothing to check for. Day seventeen, my sister asked if I'd had them done at a salon. Day twenty. Still on. I took them off because I wanted to try a different shade, not because they'd failed. That's the part I keep coming back to. I took them off. They didn't come off on their own. I chose to change them. I've used the same seven bottles twice since then. For my daughters, when they wanted to do their nails. Not for mine. If your polish chips before the week is out. If you've tried every long-wear formula and nothing holds. If you've started planning your outfits around whether your nails will still be presentable. There's a better option.
Read this if your nail polish chips before the week is out.
