Surfer’s Code - 20th Anniversary Edition The last twenty years of my life have taught me a great deal about hope, faith, and purpose, and how to find the internal power to push forward towards the horizon and the next wave. I’ve learned that success doesn’t insulate you from loss, and that heartbreak doesn’t extinguish hope. Somehow, loss and hope coexist. With the darkness, there is always a dawn. You carry both in your heart, one scars you, one heals you. You learn to live with both. Twenty years ago, I was still learning how to be a husband, a father, a builder of businesses, and a man who wanted his life to stand for something deeper than competitive success. I knew that athletes inspired others through their success, personality, and character – I always took that responsibility seriously. After my career was over, I wanted to continue uplifting and inspiring, not through my surfing ability, but through the philosophy and values that surfing had instilled in me. Surfing gave me a great gift, and now it was time to give it back. I wasn’t sure how, and then I received a call from Glenn Hening, the founder of Surfrider Foundation, surfing’s iconic environmental organization. “Hey, Shaun, I need your help to inspire a group of kids I am bringing to Rincon to raise awareness for a significant environmental problem. It’s gonna cost $8 million to fix, and I can offer you a $100 budget to help solve it.” That request led me to write Surfer’s Code. At the time, I didn’t know it would travel as far as it has. It just keeps on rollin’ like an endless wave, touching lives across the planet. I just knew I needed something foundational to give the kids, something solid to stand on when life felt uncertain. Writing those lines also helped me step back, slow down, pay attention, and choose to share what surfing had really taught me about life, including camaraderie, resilience, perseverance, integrity, and hope. These past twenty years have shown me that while success may be defined by winning, true success is measured by the values we live by, each and every day. Success is keeping your word, apologizing when you’re wrong, being humble, reaching out a helping hand when needed, and just being kind. I’m grateful for every wave I’ve ridden, but I’m even more grateful for the tribe who have been with me along the way – family, friends, surfers, and now audiences who have given up their valuable time to hear my stories and write their own version of Surfer’s Code – their Code, not mine, their words not mine. I have come to realize that while the words of great leaders may inspire us, it is our own words that can transform us. Life moves a lot like waves. The sets roll in. There is a high tide and a low. There are lulls and then a wave that surprises you. There are crushing wipeouts you don’t see coming. But there’s always another wave if you stay in the water long enough… I am very stoked to re-release Surfer's Code for the 20th Anniversary.
