I need to say something and BookTok might come for me but I don't care. Phantom of the Opera is the ORIGINAL dark romance. Before Rhysand. Before Hades and Persephone. Before every morally gray love interest that's taken over your FYP... there was a masked man in a candlelit underground lair writing music for the woman he was obsessed with. He literally built her a THRONE ROOM beneath an opera house. With a lake. And candles. And a pipe organ. That's not a villain. That's a dark romance MMC with VISION. I grew up on Phantom. Saw it on stage when I was fifteen and it RUINED me for normal love stories. I spent the next decade chasing that feeling... the ache, the longing, the "I know he's dangerous but the way he LOOKS at her." And then BookTok happened and suddenly everyone was reading about brooding immortals and possessive fae warriors and I was like... oh. So we've all been looking for the Phantom this whole time. We just didn't know it. (Christine chose Raoul and I will NEVER be okay about it. Never. That man offered her sunshine and a normal life and she LEFT the underground candlelit lair of a tortured musical genius. The AUDACITY.) Anyway. I found this handbag and I genuinely gasped out loud. Like, hand-over-mouth gasped. Deep teal leather... almost black in certain light. And there's the half-mask. White porcelain against dark leather. Red roses. Shattered chandelier glass. Golden filigree. It looks like something that would be sitting on a velvet chair in the Phantom's lair. Next to a candelabra. With a handwritten note that says "your obedient servant." I carry it everywhere now. To the bookstore. To the coffee shop where I read. A girl at Barnes & Noble saw it last week and literally GRABBED my arm and whispered "is that Phantom?" and we stood in the romance aisle for twenty minutes talking about dark love interests and which Phantom production is the definitive one. (2004 film walked so BookTok could run. I said what I said.) If you know the difference between a love interest and a DARK love interest... if your ideal romantic gesture involves candlelight and mild psychological torment and an underground lake... this bag is speaking directly to your soul. Oh, and right now it's buy one leather handbag, get one FREE. $142.95 for two. I bought one for myself and one for my best friend who has "morally gray" in her Kindle highlights. She opened it and screamed. Literally screamed. Her husband thought something was wrong. Nothing was wrong. Everything was EXACTLY right. The Phantom would approve.
