Traveling by Design Dubrovnik, Croatia Now I understand why everybody wants to come to Dubrovnik. The only problem is that everybody seems to have decided to come at the same time. It is crowded. It is hot. The narrow streets are full, the walls are busy, the boats keep moving, and local guides somehow manage to navigate it all with patience and skill. After today, I understand why. Croatia sits along the Adriatic Sea, where Central Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean meet. It is a country of about 3.87 million people, with more than 1,700 kilometers of mainland coastline and over 1,200 islands, islets, and reefs. That coastline is not just beautiful. It is dramatic. Clear blue water. Limestone cliffs. Terracotta rooftops. Stone towns facing the sea. Harbors that still carry the memory of trade, defense, travel, and survival. Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most famous treasures. Known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, it is a city of stone, sea, history, beauty, resilience, and extraordinary human design. Today I walked the old city walls. From above, Dubrovnik feels like a living sculpture: red rooftops, narrow streets, church towers, courtyards, fortresses, and the Adriatic Sea surrounding the city on almost every side. The walls make you understand the geography immediately. This city was built to face the sea, trade with the sea, protect itself from the sea, and survive because of the sea. Later, I took a boat ride around the Old Town. From the water, the city looks even more powerful. The walls rise directly from the rock. The fortresses stand at the edges. You can see how carefully Dubrovnik was positioned, protected, and designed. Dubrovnik became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onward. For centuries, it was known as Ragusa, a maritime republic that built its strength through diplomacy, trade, shipbuilding, and careful political balance between larger powers. It survived earthquakes, empires, trade rivalries, political changes, and war. Its Old City became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Then, during the Croatian War of Independence, Dubrovnik was attacked in 1991 and 1992. The Old City suffered serious damage. Homes, churches, public buildings, roofs, streets, and parts of the historic fabric were hit. What makes walking here so powerful today is the restoration. The city was not simply repaired. It was restored with respect for its original character. The stone still feels old, the rooftops glow again, and the walls still hold the city. The beauty returned, but the history did not disappear. I also visited the old pharmacy inside the Franciscan Monastery, one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, founded in 1317. I bought moisturizers made from an old formula, created in the same tradition that has lived here for more than 700 years. That small detail made the day feel even more human. A city known for walls also preserved a place of healing. A city marked by war still offers beauty. A city visited by the world still belongs to the people who live inside it. Dubrovnik is spectacular, but not only because it is beautiful. It is spectacular because it carries centuries of intelligence, damage, restoration, and life inside its walls. Travel by Design, Not by Default. Maria
