After a decade of public service at the National Museum, he bid farewell to the institution and decided to strike a path on his own in order to become a freelance tour guide in Manila. WHAT’S IN A NAME? “WALKING WITH THE MANILA MAHARL-LIKHA [WWTMM]” The use of the word “Mahar-likha” features the combination of two Filipino words: the first one being the word “maharlika” referring to the ancient Tagalog freemen warrior-class of precolonial times, and the second one being the word “likha”, which in English could be translated into the word “creation.” The prominent use of the word “maharlika”, DOES NOT in any way pertain to a later connotation that is often attached to the word, which has some decidedly political undertones. In fact, WWTMM aims to eventually help in the efforts to extricate this noble word from being a vessel of misappropriation in politics, as well as in some sectors of mainstream media. The goal is to help in eventually reclaiming the true meaning of this pre-colonial word, which has valuable traditional and socio-cultural significance. “Likha”, on the other hand, is used as a counter-balance to the word “maharlika”, which when combined becomes “Mahar-likha”, signifying Mr. J.R. Arella’s background in visual arts, as well as the literary arts.
