Kurt Seligmann: Magical Writings and Surreal Artwork ... Discover the life, writings, and esoteric interests of Kurt Seligmann, the Swiss-American Surrealist whose scholarship helped connect the history of magic with modern art, comparative religion, and mythology. Born in Basel in 1900, Seligmann moved to Paris in 1929 and became involved with the Surrealist movement, creating paintings and prints filled with fantastic imagery, alchemical motifs, and references to occult traditions. Explore 'The History of Magic and the Occult' (formerly titled 'The Mirror of Magic'), Seligmann’s landmark 1948 study of magic, folklore, and occult history. Drawing on rare books and ethnographic research, he examined the significance of magical beliefs in different societies and their influence on artistic expression. His work offers a distinctive perspective on the relationship between symbolism, ritual, mythology, alchemy, Kabbalah, and the human imagination. For anyone interested in occult philosophy, comparative mythology, esoteric art, and the history of religious ideas, Seligmann offers a fascinating example of how the study of magic can illuminate the history of human creativity ...
