NOCINO 💚 an all-Ontario, foraged black walnut liqueur. I’ve been waiting all year to tell you about this aperitif. And you all haven’t let me forget it. Nocino has been our most requested blend of the year by far. I get it. It embodies our motto of ‘fruit flowers and feelings’ better than almost anything else. And there’s just something magic about black walnuts. They impart a big chocolate/vanilla note that keeps me up at night. The discovery that you can get those flavours from things that grow here is the epitome of why I started Revel. It’s why we use Ontario ingredients, always. Each bottle contains nearly a third of a pound of black walnuts, painstakingly picked over 2 weeks this summer, and macerated in spirit for 5 months to create a tincture. It smells like sweet milk chocolate, melting on the stove in the fall. It smells like dried fennel and anise, crunching underfoot. It smells like the long rays of sunbeams at dusk, and the happiness of a bee coated in pollen. Nocino is a traditional Italian liqueur, but of course we made it with botanicals that grow here. We chose sweet herbs to dance with the walnuts: nepitella (a variety of mint), anise hyssop, marigold, dandelions and birch bark. It’s a collection of years of knowledge, the ebb and flow of plant life, and a reflection of our movements throughout. It’s both time and place. Nocino is delicious on its own, but it also works wonderfully in cocktails. I personally love it in place of the vermouth in a Boulevardier. Drink it as a digestif, but it’s also traditional to pour it over ice cream, in an affogato. Or pour a splash in your coffee for a delightful little treat. Find Nocino online, or at the cidery in Guelph now.
