Jodie, a mum-of-three, had a good job and owned her own home. Until life suddenly changed. Kind people like you stepped in… A family medical emergency turned her life upside down overnight. It began with a phone call that no parent ever wants to receive: Jodie’s 17-year-old son, who was overseas, had nearly died and had been rushed to hospital. Forced to leave her job to become a full-time carer for her son, Jodie’s income disappeared. Soon, so did the food in her cupboards. “I was frightened. I'd never ever before found myself in a situation where I didn't have any food for my children. We didn’t know where to turn.” When Jodie came to Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai, she was treated with the compassion and dignity she deserved. She remembers the relief of opening her first box of food. “My spirit lifted because it was ingredients to make proper meals… it was real food to keep my children full and healthy.” That support gave Jodie the breathing room she needed to recover. Today, her family is back on their feet and she has started a new job. Stories like hers show how vital your support is when crisis hits. “If I hadn’t come to the Mission, there was nowhere else for us to go. Without the Mission’s help, my children would have gone hungry. Now we can get back to living life.” *The people the Mission supports are doing their best in difficult circumstances.
