Tip #14: When in doubt, breathe out. That’s a powerful nervous system reset. Breathing out slows your heart rate. It activates the vagus nerve and shifts you into the parasympathetic state, your body’s rest & digest, quiet alertness, and recovery mode. When you exhale, you let go. You don’t hold on to what no longer serves you. And often, it helps you naturally slow the pace of your breath. On average, we tend to breathe 12 to 20 times per minute. But slowing our breath down to 6 per minute helps us counter stress, improve heart rate variability, and return to balance. Stress makes us hold our breath, tense up, and brace. We get stuck in fast, shallow inhales. And when someone says “Just breathe!”, we often gasp in more air, hiking up our shoulders, creating even more tension, and forgetting about the exhale. So, when in doubt, breathe out. Let it go. Feel your shoulders drop, your jaw unclench, your mind clear. You don’t have to fix everything. You don’t even have to take a deep breath in. Just start by breathing out, slowly, fully, gently. -- Sources: Zaccaro et al., “How breath-control can change your life: a systematic review on psycho-physiological correlates of slow breathing”, Front.
