I'm shaking just typing this out but I need to warn other people… It was about 4:30am last Thursday when I woke up to the sound of keys jingling near our back bi-fold doors. We sleep in the downstairs bedroom, so I'm only about 10 feet from the garden. I thought I was dreaming but then I heard the handle rattle. I got up and looked through the glass and froze in fear when I saw them. Two blokes in hoodies. One holding a torch. The other one bent down trying to pick our lock. My hands started shaking and my heart was pounding. I quickly switched on the garden lights thinking they'd bolt, but they must've thought it was just a sensor because they carried on for a few more seconds. So I banged hard on the glass and shouted. That’s when they legged it over the back fence. My wife woke up in a panic asking what happened, we spent the rest of the night sat in the kitchen with every light on and my baseball bat close by. We're both in our 60s and I dread to think if they had actually gotten in. To make things worst, we had one of those expensive doorbell cameras which I paid £130 for. But it only watches the front door so it was completely useless. We checked footage the next morning and even that was just grainy black and white shadows. The officer who came round said: Most break-ins happen round the back and your doorbell can't see that. Even if it does capture something, the black and white video doesn’t really help us identify suspects. At that point it hit me. I had nothing to protect my back garden. Nothing that could identify suspects. And nothing that police could actually use. I felt so angry. That afternoon my brother-in-law came over… He worked for the Met police for 25 years. First thing he said: Your doorbell's watching the wrong door. Then he showed me something on his phone. A video clip from his SafeView security camera at 2am. Plus you can set it to alert for only human motion, so if anyone steps near those doors again, I’ll get a ping straight to my phone with the recording. It saves everything straight onto a little memory card that comes with it, so I’m not paying £120 a year just to see my own footage.
