Happy Founder's Day 🙏 — Remembering Dr. G. Joseph Gnanadickam Every year on this day, we pause to remember the man whose vision built Joseph Eye Hospital. Dr. G. Joseph Gnanadickam was born on July 14, 1900, in Coimbatore, and raised by his mother after his father passed away before his birth. Hardship shaped him — but it never deterred him. After his study in Medicine, he was trained under the Swedish missionary Dr. Kugelberg at Tirupattur and became a skilled ophthalmologist. In 1934, he came to Tiruchirappalli carrying a single conviction: that best eye care should not be reserved for the privileged few. He founded Joseph Eye Hospital and immediately took it beyond its walls — pioneering community eye camps so that care reached villages, not just cities. He went on to establish the School for the Blind and the Bishop Diehl Rehabilitation Centre, believing that restoring sight was only half the mission; restoring dignity was the other half. He was also a builder of institutions beyond his own — a founding figure of the Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association, and a leader within the Rotary Club, YMCA, and Red Cross. In 1962, in an act of remarkable foresight, he entrusted Joseph Eye Hospital to the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church — ensuring his mission would belong to generations, not just to him. That mission has never stopped growing. Today, JEH has performed over 1 million surgeries, treated more than 10 million patients, trained over 250 ophthalmologists, and reaches thousands more each year through vision centres, satellite hospitals, and rural screening camps — all rooted in the belief Dr. Joseph held nearly a century ago: that sight is a right, not a privilege. Dr. Joseph was not just a physician. He was a visionary whose compassion, leadership, and quiet courage still guide every doctor, nurse, and member at JEH family today. This Founder's Day, we honour his memory not just in words, but in every eye we help see the world again. 🙏 Thank you, Dr. Joseph Gnanadickam, for the light you chose to follow — and the light you left behind.
