If you don’t know, my name is a Kristy and I have been serving Union County growing the very best perennials, natives, pollinator-friendly and veggie starts for you and your family for 20 years. This will have been year 15 of serving the Waxhaw Farmers Market. I’ve been fighting head and neck cancer for the last 2 years (and my partner, Jessie, fought esophageal and stomach for a couple years as well). The last 2 years have consisted of nightmarish scenarios, starting with April 2024, when Dr Douglas Villeret at CEENTA Pineville removed the wrong part of my tongue and by the time I found my current team (including 10+ docs, dentists and oral surgeons), it had spread. Surgery #2, I lost another part of my tongue and had a skin graft from my belly to reconstruct it. “To be sure it was gone,” I was strapped to a table by my face with a tongue depressor covered in wax in my mouth choking me and CHERNOBYLED 30 times...the word radiation seems insufficient when it is your mouth, tongue and neck being "treated." Weeks later, I was back getting a biopsy for surgery #3. I lost half my tongue, had a trach, a feeding tube for months, lost 30 pounds, 22 lymph nodes were removed and had 2 neck dissections, ICU, a week in the hospital. 2 months later (let’s say it all together), the cancer was back. I’m now in chemo and it blows, but the cancer is responding well. Fun fact: they don’t like to say head and neck cancer is “curable,” just treatable. So there’s tons of fun and people in hazmat suits putting scary drugs in my port to come. Now, head and neck cancers aren’t supported by a lot of folks (by that I mean funding and charities that can help financially). There are not many places to turn to for help and we are still (and probably will be) struggling for a while to come. Jessie is working 6-7 days a week and coming home and working in the greenhouse til 1:00 to pot seedlings for opening day…year 15 at our beloved Waxhaw Farmers Market. But I missed some days last summer so we got booted to “part time,” where we are supposed to reserve our place in (what might as well be) a Thunderdome-style match. I’m kidding, but that’s the first thing I thought about. I know I said I’d keep it short but I don’t know how to do that and explain. I’ve had some of the same customers since my very first day and to say I didn’t think I could be more broken is an understatement. After so many years as a vendor, missing days at the end of the season last year because I was fighting for my life should not have my livelihood taken because I was fighting for my life last year. If you’d like to see us there, please send an email to [email protected]. We should be a full time vendor and have a permanent spot. We would sure love to see YOU there. I may be propped up like Weekend at Bernie’s, but I’ll keep bringing you the best as long as you’ll let me. As for this weekend, COME SEE US at the house! I've been waiting for a year to see you! ❤🌱🌺
