Ad text
Please, eat. I know it’s a bit of bind in recovery. The reality is that the body needs to feel safe enough to eat and at the same time, food brings safety. So, for example, we won’t stop to eat lunch if we are being chased by a bear, and, if we have been wandering in the jungles for days on end looking for non-existent berries, our bodies will go into fear. If the body is not getting enough food or in balanced amounts, it will perceive the situation as dangerous. This is ancient nervous system architecture at play. Understandably, many people struggling with EDs at some point experienced the world as unsafe and found ED behaviours to bring a sembalance of order and relief from the scary and unpredictable. So it’s not so easy to tease apart where the fear is coming from. However, at the core, food brings feelings of safety to our highly evolved and intelligent nervous systems. Food indicates that it is safe enough to pause, take in nourishment, and connect. And we all know that recovery requires more than just food - other sensory inputs are needed to let the body know we are safe here. And eating in ways that are performative that is often seen in clinics where one is often forced to eat is not helpful. However, eating is a way that brings us back to Earth. It helps organize our mental thinking and emotional processing. It helps us ground into our ourselves and provides us with substance so we have direction, discernment and definition. I recognize that for some this sounds unappealing - being more ethereal and a few meters above the ground might be more familiar. However, we are humans, of this Earth, made of Earth, and finding our center of gravity along with the gravitational pull of the Earth’s body is very important in a world where so much is changing. Rapid rate of change are happening and before us, and it is up to us to find our feet and navigate these times well. We each have our part to play in this great collective shift - and we need to nourishment and energy from food to give it our all. You ready? Let’s eat!
