I had a plan before I had my daughter. A career I'd worked hard for, a clear idea of what our future looked like, financial goals my husband and I had talked about for years. I felt prepared in a way that, looking back, came from not knowing how much life was about to change. And then she arrived and I understood, very quickly, that the plan needed rethinking. Going back to work full-time after mat leave was one of the hardest things I've done. Not because I didn’t love teaching, but because every day felt like I was choosing between two things I shouldn't have to choose between. Being present for her or building the future I still wanted for our family. I cut back to part-time teaching. That helped. But it didn't solve the quieter, longer-term worry about whether we were actually getting ahead, or just getting by. I spent a long time assuming that tension was just part of motherhood. That wanting both things was unrealistic and I needed to pick one and make peace with it. What changed my mind wasn't a pitch or a promise.
