With Tabloid, we set out to design a desk with useful storage that could live comfortably both at home or in an office. After lots of sketching we liked the idea of simple planes coming together to create a generous worksurface surrounded by a cozy gallery. Slim steel legs would tuck into the negative space at the corners suspending the entire composition in space and giving it a lighter stance. After several rounds of crude mockups made from thick honeycombed cardboard and hot glue and a couple of more finished prototypes, we pinned down final dimensions and proportions. We chose to line the working surface with natural linoleum adding durability, warmth, and an opportunity for color. The gallery doubles as a modesty panel meaning the desk can easily float in any room away from the wall. A small hatch centered on the back edge of the worksurface leads to a cord management shelf below with plenty of room for a power strip or two.
