Hi. I'm Jane. I print old books onto bags. That is the entire business. About three hundred designs, drawn from around fifty stories. Poe. Shelley. Stoker. Carroll. Lovecraft. An artist redraws every single one by hand for the shape it is going on, which takes far longer than scanning an old cover would. Most of them are printed. Some are not. On the Appliqué ones, the figures you see raised are separate pieces of vegan leather, cut out and stitched on by hand, so they sit above the surface and cast a small shadow. The owl. The balloon. The cat. Those take longer to make and they cost more. The word Appliqué in the name is how you tell. None of this was the plan. Here is what actually happened. In 2023 my copy of Dracula finally gave up. Cracked spine. Loose pages. That soft, furry feel a paperback gets when you have been through it too many times. I had ALREADY bought a clean replacement, which was sitting on the shelf looking smug, and I still could not make myself throw the old one out. So I did the normal, well-adjusted thing. I printed its cover onto a bag and carried it around. Then a woman stopped me on the train. Then another one, in a cafe. Then a man outside a bookshop who owned the same edition and REALLY wanted to discuss it. I was going to be late. Every one of them asked me the same five words… "Where did you get that?" I did not have an answer. So I made one up. Then I had to go and make it true. The shop opened the year after. Three designs. Dracula. The Raven. Frankenstein. Sold out in WEEKS. I sat there refreshing the orders page going, huh. Anyway. The bit I have to say plainly, because a photo cannot say it for me. What you see here is vegan leather. NOT cowhide. I would rather you knew that now than opened the box and found out. The rest, fast. Wipes clean. The tote takes a 13 inch laptop. Some of these come as a set right now. A handbag from the clear-out, or an Appliqué handbag, comes with two long wallets free. Wallets on the shelf are any three for the price of one. The page you land on shows it. You get 30 days from delivery to send it back, unused, if it turns out not to be the one. Most designs have a matching wallet. Also not my idea. People kept emailing to ask until I gave in. One last thing. I read our reviews expecting to hear about stitching. Nope. People talk about the book. Which one it was, and how old they were when they found it. That is the only reason I am still doing this. So — which one is yours? — Jane P.S. Fair warning. You WILL get stopped and asked where you got it. Leave a little extra time.
