All your training days should be organized from top to bottom based on the degree of motor unit recruitment (MUR), speed of contraction, contraction type, and the amount of fatigue certain forms of training induce. However, there are exceptions to this rule: 1) When it comes to sprinting, heavy resisted sprint loads can potentiate the rest of the session. I use resisted sprint training as my primer unless I am doing contrast sprints. Doing resisted sprints last can be a great tool for repeat power capacity, but I like to front load them in the session for mechanical and potentiation purposes. Your goal matters here. If you want to make changes to technique, these changes need to targeted before fatigue sets in. 2) Some coaches advocate for doing olympic lifts or other heavy lifts before jumping due to the potentiation effect. I like this idea, especially if it takes you longer to feel warmed up. This will also save you time. The volume of jumps also matters. A more extensive, higher volume approach can be performed prior to any lifting because performance isn’t necessarily your goal here - it’s getting the volume in. 3) On speed days, you should probably perform jumps after your sprints, but I have also found jumps, plyos and throws to be a great warmup tool in replacement of your typical dynamic warmup. I firmly believe that personal preference and context matters a lot here. To name one example, jumps can be great to do first within team training if you train your team early in the morning. In this case, a longer warmup with jumps embedded within can be great. Today’s session: 3x30yd Straight Leg Bounds w/ 8kg 6x10yd Accel w/ 20kg 6x25yd Variable Resistance Accels: 16kg load ➡️ dropped down to 8kg once I hit 12mph Broad Jumps until maxed out @my.tapex variable resistance setting was incredible.
