Illegal Immigration is a System of Modern-Day Slavery Many well-meaning Independents and moderate Democrats want immigration policies that are fair, compassionate, secure, and uphold human dignity for all. But pause and reflect on this hard reality: illegal immigration creates a system ripe for modern exploitation. Vulnerable people—often fleeing hardship—are funneled into low-wage, abusive jobs with no legal protections, no recourse against mistreatment, and constant fear of deportation. This leaves them trapped, treated as disposable labor, much like historical forms of bondage where individuals lack rights or agency. Euphemisms like "undocumented immigrants" may feel gentler, but they soften the truth and reduce urgency to act. Consider: If we had called chattel slaves "undocumented service workers," it would have obscured the moral outrage and delayed abolition. The same dynamic applies here—soft language tolerates exploitation rather than confronting it. During the Biden administration, shifts toward milder terms (including proposals to replace "alien" with "noncitizen" and emphasis on "undocumented" by figures like Rep. Zoe Lofgren) were presented as humane, yet they risk normalizing a shadow economy that preys on the powerless. States' resistance to federal enforcement—via sanctuary policies, blocking ICE access, or funding lawsuits—often backfires. It doesn't shield the exploited; it can force more aggressive federal responses, heighten risks for vulnerable individuals, and erode uniform standards the Founders established after rejecting the Articles of Confederation's fragmented approach (where one state's lax rules imposed citizenship on all others, violating sovereignty). The Civil War wasn't ignited solely by slavery, but by leaders who tolerated inequality instead of affirming "all men are created equal." Today, accepting a divided reality—where some live under rule of law while others exist in exploitative shadows—echoes that failure. Abraham Lincoln warned in his House Divided Speech: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction, or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as well as new, North as well as South. Today, we are forced to wrestle with this question once again when we fought with our very lives to arrest and eradicate slavery- it is fitting that we do so on the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.- Sanctuary approaches that hinder enforcement and encourage unrest don't advance freedom—they perpetuate division and risk entrenching exploitation as acceptable. True compassion, fairness, and security mean using precise terms: illegal immigration and illegal alien (reflecting federal law violations). It means demanding humane but firm enforcement to dismantle exploitative cycles, safeguard all workers (citizen and immigrant), restore community trust, and live up to America's core promise: freedom and equality under law. Reflect honestly: Does softening language end suffering, or enable it? Does defying federal authority protect the vulnerable, or expose them further? Independents and moderate Democrats—your values can bridge this divide. Join the honest conversation. Demand accountability. Enforce the law decisively to end exploitation and build a more just nation. Justice for All.
