"What are you doing here?" "Savin’ your butt apparently. You’re welcome, princess" I retort, recovering quickly. “I told you I didn’t need a hero,” she mutters, brushing herself off and looking up into the sky. “Funny, considerin’ what I just did.” Her head jerks back to me. “And what did you just do?” “I saved you,” I reply without any hesitation. I look up at the roof then back to her. "Wanna tell me what the hell you’re doin’ climbin’ the barn roof dressed like that, princess?" “Quack” She growls as she scours the sky again. "I was trying to get that stupid pie-thieving duck!" She gestures up to the barn roof where Duck Norris is proudly perched on top of the cupola with a paper bag hanging from his beak. I get to my feet and dust off my jeans. "Let me get this straight. You came outside, dressed like that. “I take a deep breath to try and calm down my sudden frustration. “And decided the best thing to do was climb onto the roof of the barn—alone might I add—to catch a duck with your pie?" Her perfectly arched brows furrow. "Yes." Period. Emphatic. Like she cannot see the ridiculousness of the situation. "You didn't think that, oh I don't know, it might end up with you fallin’. off. the. freaking. roof?" I spit out. Cora's gaze widens and then narrows. "But he stole my pie." I can't help but laugh. "OK. So the evil duck stole your pie. What were you gonna do? Arrest him?" She rolls her eyes. "Of course not, Rhett." God, that accent of hers saying my name does things to me. "So you were gonna tackle him and get your pie back? Then what, lock him up?" I say. The idea of anyone trying to catch that mischievous bird is laughable. "I just wanted my breakfast back.” If she started pouting, I wouldn’t be surprised. “He broke into my house, stole it off my counter, then flew out the window. It was a break and enter. I’m entitled to reclaim my property." “Right. So you’re sayin’ my cross-eyed, one-legged duck somehow got into your locked kitchen, sniffed out your pie, and then hopped out of your reach? That bird may be many things, but a Houdini he is not." "Yes, he di–wait. Did you say your duck?" WANT MORE COWBOY/PRINCESS/CHEEKY-DUCK ANTICS?
