There is a moment at the cross that many people read quickly and move past, but it carries deep revelation. After Jesus had already died, a soldier came and pierced His side. At first glance, it can seem unnecessary, almost like an afterthought. But nothing about that moment was random. It was not adding to the work. It was revealing what had already been finished. The Bible says in John 19:34 that when His side was pierced, blood and water flowed out. That detail matters. This was not just physical evidence of death. This was a picture of what His death had accomplished. The blood speaks of forgiveness. The water speaks of cleansing and new life. In one moment, you see both justification and renewal flowing out of Him toward you. This was not something you would later earn or activate. It flowed because the work was already complete. Ephesians 1:7 says that in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. That means forgiveness is not something you chase. It is something that has already been released. And the water shows that you are not just forgiven. You are made new. There is also something deeper here. Jesus was called the second Adam. And when the first Adam was put into a deep sleep, God opened his side and brought forth Eve. Now look at the cross. Jesus, the last Adam, had His side opened, and from that place came what would give life to His people. This was not coincidence. This was fulfillment. The church, your new identity, flows out of what He finished, not what you build. And notice this. The piercing happened after He said, “It is finished.” That means this moment is not about adding suffering. It is about revealing the result of what has already been accomplished. Nothing was lacking. Nothing needed to be completed. The flow from His side was the evidence that everything had already been secured. So this is not a picture of you needing to be broken open to receive from God. Jesus was pierced so you would not have to be. This is not teaching that pain produces your cleansing. It is revealing that His finished work already has. You are not waiting for something to flow. It has already flowed. For you who feel unclean, who feel like there is still something in your life that disqualifies you, this is where the finished work speaks clearly. The cleansing has already been provided. 1 John 1:7 says the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Not some. All. That means there is no part of your life outside of what has already been washed. And for you who are trying to believe, this is where you can stop striving. You are not trying to get God to release something toward you. It has already been released. You are not trying to become new. You have been made new through what Jesus has finished. Titus 3:5 says He saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. That means the new life you are looking for has already been given. So when you see His side pierced, do not just see a wound. See an opening. Not an opening that still needs to happen, but one that already has. Forgiveness has already flowed. Cleansing has already flowed. New life has already flowed. And none of it is dependent on you maintaining it. That moment was not about what was being taken from Him. It was about what was being released to you.
