I am the most unusual wolf in the Moonvale Pack. Every other werewolf is born in human form, not shifting for the first time until they're an adult. But I was born a wolf. My brother, Lucas, had his first shift at eighteen. He left our northern territory not long after, becoming the Realm Guardian—the human royal family's most trusted protector. My sister, Serena, lives for battle. At twenty, she took command of the unified northern defense line. She isn't an Alpha, but on the battlefield, the commanders of all twelve border packs answer to her. And then there's me—Nina Spencer. At twenty-two, I can't even hold a steady human form. Lately, I've started to look more like a fluffy white fox than anything else. My father, Damon, is the Alpha of the Moonvale Pack. He worried so much he ground his way through three mouthguards before finally setting aside the safest stretch of creek valley in our territory just for me. No rogues, no dangerous beasts. I spent my days basking in the moonlight and chasing rabbits. Life was carefree. Until the day a royal hunting party crossed the boundary markers and barged into my valley. Princess Beatrice of the Kingdom of Astra took one look at me and was instantly captivated. She raised her riding crop, her eyes alight with excitement. “A silver-white fox! It must be a rare breed.” “Catch it. I want its pelt, whole. It will make a perfect shawl for the winter festival.” The princes with her laughed in agreement as the guards released drones and hounds, sealing off the valley. I remembered what Father had told me. If someone bullies you, call your family. So I lifted my chin and took a deep breath. “Awoooo—” My fledgling howl carried over the stream, echoing through the mountains. Beatrice laughed until tears streamed down her face. “This stupid fox is trying to howl like a wolf!” What she didn't know was that in a conference room on the unified northern defense line, Serena's head snapped up. And hundreds of kilometers away, my father’s golden eyes shot open. … I dropped the rabbit I’d just caught and bared my teeth at Beatrice, hoping she’d see I was a wolf. But I'd inherited my mother’s soft, long fur, and Father had spoiled me with years of overfeeding until I was round and fluffy. Instead of frightening anyone, my snarl only made Beatrice shriek with delight. “Look! It’s smiling at me!” “A fox this clever would be a waste to skin right away. I’ll keep it for a few days. I can deal with it when I’m bored.” “As long as you like it, you can keep it for as long as you want,” Prince Cedric said indulgently. Prince Felix took a tranquilizer crossbow from their vehicle and aimed at my foreleg. “Shoot it in the leg. That way it won’t run.” The bolt grazed my ear and sank into the tree behind me. I arched my back and dove into the brush. I might not be able to shift, but chasing rabbits every day had made me fast. The guards chased me for what felt like an eternity, but they never even brushed my tail. Beatrice’s patience wore thin. She lashed out, striking the guard beside her across the face with her crop. “Useless! There are dozens of you, and you can’t catch one fox?” A line of blood bloomed on the guard’s cheek, but he only lowered his head, not daring to resist. Cedric opened an equipment case on the off-road vehicle and pulled out a black net that shimmered with a faint golden light. “Don’t be angry. This is the bloodline suppression net Realm Guardian Lucas gave us. Not even a full-grown, enraged wolf can break free.” Beatrice’s eyes lit up. “To be caught by the Realm Guardian’s own equipment... what an honor for the little thing.” The moment I saw the wolf-fang-shaped ID tag on the net’s edge, dread coiled in my stomach. That had been one of my brother’s baby fangs. When I was a pup, I used to carry my lost baby teeth around in my mouth. Lucas, afraid I’d swallow one, used one of his own old fangs to make a clasp for a soft little net he’d woven. He used it to take me into the valley to catch butterflies. Later, after he joined the royal household, he incorporated that clasp into equipment designed to capture dangerous rogues. I had never imagined that the tool he made to protect me would one day be used on me. I shot into the trees, but a drone pulled the suppression net wide. It sailed over the branches and dropped down, blanketing me with perfect accuracy. The wolfsbane-laced barbs bit into my skin, crushing the already faint wolf-spirit inside me. I cried out as my legs gave way, and I crashed to the ground. “Got it!” Beatrice clapped, laughing. I struggled, but the net tightened on its own, carving bloody welts into my white fur. A guard reached for me. I fought through the pain and sank my teeth into his wrist. He screamed, flinging me away. The smile vanished from Beatrice’s face. She leaped from the vehicle and stomped on my tail. “A mere beast dares to bite one of my people?” She snatched the whip from the guard and brought it down on me without a moment's hesitation. I curled into a ball, pain forcing tears from my eyes. Growing up, if I so much as lost a tuft of fur, Father would have the pack Healer examine me for hours. I had never known this kind of humiliation. But the suppression net pinned my strength and severed the pack mindlink. No matter how I struggled, I couldn’t break free of the bloodline imprint Lucas had left on it. When Beatrice finally tired of beating me, she had her guards stuff me into a transport cage. “Take it back to the hunting camp. I want the entire capital to see what a rare fox I’ve caught.” As the convoy pulled out of the valley, I lay on the icy cage floor, watching the familiar stream recede into the distance. No one had answered my howl. Father and Serena must have been too far away to reach me in time. I licked the blood from my paw and tucked my head into my tail. If I’d known this would happen, I should have spent less time sleeping and actually learned how to fight from Serena. It was only later that I learned that not long after the convoy left, a colossal silver wolf landed by the creek. Father smelled the blood in the soil, his golden pupils tightening instantly. The next second, the Alpha’s roar shook the entire northern territory. “Who touched my daughter?”I was taken to the royal hunting camp. Beatrice had a gilded display cage set up outside her luxurious tent and ordered a servant to fasten a leather collar around my neck. A metal tag hung from it, engraved with the name Snowball. Every hair on my body stood on end with rage. I had a name. I was Nina, the youngest daughter of the Alpha of the Moonvale Pack. Beatrice pinched my ear, her smile a warning. “From now on, your name is Snowball.” “When I call you, you will wag your tail. If you disobey, I’ll clip your claws off one by one.” She picked up a freshly roasted piece of venison and waved it in front of me. The scent drifted over me, and I swallowed instinctively. I hadn’t eaten since I was caught. Beatrice tossed the meat into the mud. “Snowball, bark twice like a dog, and I’ll let you eat.” Several princes sat in camping chairs nearby, waiting for the show. I turned my head away. No wolf of the Moonvale Pack, no matter how weak, would ever bark for food. Beatrice waited a moment, and then her face darkened. “Ungrateful thing.” She ground the venison into the mud with her boot, then had several royal hounds brought over. The hounds caught my scent at once and surrounded the cage, barking furiously and slamming themselves against the bars. I shrank into the corner, trying to stop the trembling in my limbs. Without the suppression net and collar, these hounds would never have dared approach the bloodline of Moonvale’s Alpha. But hidden on the inside of the collar were fine wolfsbane needles. With every breath, they pricked deeper, preventing my wounds from healing and sealing away my bloodline’s power. My fear only made Beatrice laugh harder. “Open it. Let them play with Snowball.” The handler hesitated. “Princess Beatrice, these hounds just tasted blood. What if they damage the fur…” “If one spot is ruined, I’ll just use another part for the shawl.” The cage door creaked open, and the hounds rushed in. Driven into a corner, I could only fight back. One of the dogs seized my hind leg and dragged me from the cage. Pain blackened my vision. In the chaos, I bit down hard on its throat. The hound collapsed with a whine. The others sensed the danger and backed away, tails tucked between their legs. I stood over it, my mouth full of blood, and for a moment, I felt I’d reclaimed a shred of a wolf’s dignity. Beatrice, however, was furious. That had been her favorite hound. “You filthy thing! I’ll rip your teeth out!” Several guards pinned me to a table. A handler brought over a pair of iron pincers and clamped them around one of my fangs. Felix pressed my head down and said casually, “Pulling a tooth will make a mess. Don’t get blood on your dress.” Beatrice’s eyes brightened. “Then heat the pincers first. It’ll cauterize the wound and teach it a lesson.” The pincers were thrust into the campfire until they glowed red-hot. I watched them draw closer and closer, a desperate whine escaping my throat. Just then, every hound in the camp dropped to the ground. One wolf howl after another echoed from the distant woods, and the horses tied near the vehicles panicked, snapping their reins. Cedric stepped out of the tent and looked toward the trembling tree line. “This is Moonvale Pack territory. Don’t tell me a pack is coming for us.” The captain of the guard answered immediately, “The royal family has a border pact with the Moonvale Pack. Besides, the Crown is protected by the werewolf Realm Guardian Lucas. The northern packs would never attack the royal family.” At the sound of my brother’s name, I began to struggle with all my might. Lucas was in the capital, in the Royal Castle. If I could just reach him, I’d be safe. But the collar blocked the mindlink, and all that came from my mouth were muffled, urgent whines. Beatrice kicked the cage impatiently. “So noisy. Muzzle it. We leave for the Royal Castle in the morning.” A guard wrapped a strap around my mouth. No one noticed that a few kilometers away, a colossal silver wolf was racing along the trail of blood on the grass. Serena told me later that she only needed one look at the dirt to recognize my blood. “It’s Nina.” She drew her tactical knife, and the killing intent that rolled off her made every nearby beast bow its head. Father, meanwhile, stopped beside the discarded packaging for the suppression net. The guards had retreated in such a hurry they’d left behind a barb carrying Lucas’s bloodline scent. “This is Lucas’s equipment,” he said. Serena whipped around. “Our brother helped the royal family take Nina?” “Impossible.” Father smashed a roadside boulder with a single blow. Eighteen years ago, when rebels reached the human capital, the old king had evacuated with his family. Lucas alone held the line outside the Royal Castle, slaughtering the rebels and sealing half his power into the royal defense core as it verged on collapse. The old king himself had come to the Moonvale border and begged him to stay, swearing a blood oath. In exchange, the Crown was never to cross the boundary of the northern protected zone, nor hunt any sentient life within werewolf territory. The suppression gear Lucas provided the Royal Guard could only be used to capture rogues that harmed humans. From that day on, humans and werewolves kept to their own. Father looked toward the capital, his gaze terrifyingly cold. “And now they take Lucas’s equipment and use it to abduct his own sister.” “I’m going to ask him myself just who this Realm Guardian has been protecting all this time.”The next day, I was loaded onto a royal convoy and taken to the capital. To show off her prize, Beatrice didn’t cover the cage. She had the transparent transport box fixed to an open-air vehicle and ordered the driver to take the busiest route through Central Avenue. She even posted a short video from the royal social media account. The streets were packed with spectators, and live comments scrolled by at lightning speed. “What a gorgeous white fox.” “I heard Princess Beatrice is going to turn it into a shawl.” “Can the leftover bones be auctioned off as royal memorabilia?” I lay on the floor of the box as the jolting of the vehicle tore my wounds open again and again. Blood soaked the white fur on my belly dark red, then dripped through drainage holes onto the car. A few people in the comments questioned the werewolf moon mark on my brow, but the royal account moderators quickly deleted their posts. Once we returned to the Royal Castle, Beatrice didn’t skin me right away. Her birthday Royal Gala was in three days. She planned to display me as her most precious trophy in front of Royal Council members and representatives from the other packs. Until then, she intended to train me into an obedient pet. She had the surveillance in the animal care wing shut off, then ordered a training platform heated until it glowed red. She put me on top of it, forcing me to stand on my hind legs. The scorching metal burned my paw pads, and I hopped from one foot to the other in agony. All around me, royal staff held up their phones, secretly filming as their laughter grew louder and louder. Beatrice laughed so hard she nearly doubled over. “Cedric, look! Snowball can dance!” “At my birthday Gala, I’m going to make it dance for everyone.” An old keeper, who had tended the animals in the Royal Castle for years, stood outside the crowd, watching me for a long time. His face suddenly paled. “Princess Beatrice, I’ve seen Realm Guardian Lucas’s wolf form.” “This animal has the same silver moon mark on its brow. Its ears, tail, and bloodline scent are all very similar to his.” The room went silent. I lifted my head at once and nodded emphatically. But Beatrice only scoffed and kicked me over. “When Lucas shifts, he’s taller than an armored vehicle. One roar from him can make a full-grown wolf kneel.” “This thing isn’t even as big as my hunting dogs. How could it possibly have anything to do with him?” “And Lucas is a wolf. That’s obviously a fox.” The old keeper still looked uneasy. “But its silver fur, and this scent… I recommend we contact the Moonvale Pack, or at least have a werewolf healer examine it.” “That’s enough!” Beatrice slapped the old man across the face. “Are you saying I can’t tell the difference between a fox and a wolf?” Clutching his cheek, the old man fell silent. Only then was Beatrice satisfied. “Skin it after the Gala. It has to be done while it’s alive. The color dulls after death.” That night, I was thrown into an unmonitored storage room in the Royal Castle’s service wing. My injuries went untreated. My phone and pack communicator were gone. The collar suppressed both my ability to shift and the mindlink, and two guards stood watch outside the door. Cold and hungry, I could only curl up in a corner, trying to cover myself with what was left of my ragged tail. Moonlight fell through a high window, landing on the crescent mark on my brow. A thread of silver light spilled from the mark and sank into the foundations of the Royal Castle. At the time, I had no idea that the bloodline power Lucas had sealed into the defense core had already sensed my presence. That same night, Father and Serena reached the outskirts of the capital. Along the way, they found silver fur that had drifted from the transport box onto the roadside, and the smell of blood grew stronger and stronger. With every step Father took, the Alpha’s power radiating from him intensified. Animals near the capital fled in all directions, and the Royal Guard’s alert systems lit up one after another. By the time hundreds of northern warriors and their vehicles appeared beyond the security barrier, the Royal Castle was sounding its highest-level alarm. Serena stood at the head of the unified northern forces, her tactical knife leveled at the sealed checkpoint. “Hand over Nina.” “Or before dawn, I will personally tear down every security gate between here and the Royal Castle.”
