In 1991, hikers in the Ötztal Alps found a body frozen in ice. He had been there for 5,300 years. His name: Ötzi. The oldest complete human ever recovered. In his leather pouch: two species of mushroom. Mushroom one: Fomes fomentarius. The Tinder Polypore. He carried dried pieces threaded on leather cord. The processed inner tissue, called amadou, catches a spark from flint and holds an ember for hours. Portable fire. Before matches existed. Mushroom two: Piptoporus betulinus. The Birch Polypore. His gut contained Trichuris trichiura, a parasitic whipworm. Capasso’s 1998 paper in The Lancet proposed he carried this mushroom as antiparasitic treatment. It contains agaric acid and polyporenic acid C. Both demonstrated antiparasitic activity. 5,300 years before clinical trials. Before extraction science. Before any of this had a name. A Neolithic human selected two specific fungi for two specific functions. Fire and medicine. Functional mushrooms are not a trend. They are a memory. Save this and send it to someone who needs to know how old this knowledge is. The kingdom is patient.
