THE SIN OF MOSES Moses was a great man of God who ever lived on earth in the Old Testament; he was always referred to as a man of God. But at a particular point of time during his lifetime and ministry, he allowed the flesh to lead him, and God was pretty displeased with him. This shows that there is no man, irrespective of our spiritual attainment, that cannot fall short of God’s grace if care is not taken. Only Jesus Christ is the sinless man that ever lived on earth; apart form Jesus, all have sinned. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life in the human flesh on earth because He is the only One who has power over sin, and giving it to mankind because someone that has a cure for a disease must not himself be suffering under same disease. Many Christians believe the notion that Moses committed sin of anger at the water Meribah in the wilderness, but the truth from the Bible says something different from anger, in fact God did not in anywhere in the Bible refer to Moses’ sin as anger or wrath. His sin could be heavier than anger which so much displeased God that he declared Moses would not enter into the promise land, though anger can also disqualify somebody from entering heaven. Despite the cordial relationship Moses had with God, he couldn't appease God to change His pronounced judgment. So you know the weight of a sin by the measure of its punishment. God is not a respecter of anybody, the closer you are to God, the careful you should be, because He expects more holiness and righteousness from those who are closer to Him. Close familiarity with God is not a license to fall into sin, because that will only bring His fierce judgment. This incident at the water of Meribah was referred to several times by Moses as one of the most regrettable things that ever happened to him. For a man to spend the most of his 120years on earth either for the preparation or actual work of getting his people out of bondage and bringing them to the Promised Land, at the last moment, he was not permitted to see it completed. He wasn’t denied of entering heaven but was deprived of seeing the fulfillment of his longtime desire. This shows God is not a respecter of any man no matter how long you have been serving and laboring for Him, He gives appropriate punishment for sin. Along the journey of the children of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land, they came to the wilderness of Zin in Kadesh where there was no water, as their besetting sin, they complained instead of praying to God who had already made such provision previously. But God gave instruction to Moses in Numbers 20:7, 8, “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8 “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.” This was a clear instruction from God, but Moses did otherwise in verses 10 and 11, “And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.” Two issues could be considered in Moses action: DISOBEDIENCE God told Moses to speak to the rock this time and not to strike it, the rock had already been smitten by Moses in Exodus 17:6, “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” So there was no need striking it again. God was displeased with Moses' disobedience. The rock here typified Jesus Christ as it was written in 1 Corinthians 10: 4 “And all drink the same spiritual drink. For they drink of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.” Since Moses had smiting the rock previously in Exodus 17, which implies the death of Jesus Christ on the cross once and for all, it was unnecessary smiting the second time. Smiting the rock the second time is a typical illustration of crucifying Jesus Christ the second time. When a Christian who has been redeemed by the blood of Jesus goes back into sin, he is crucifying Jesus Christ afresh. The Bible says in Hebrews 6: 4 – 6: “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame,” If you have tasted the salvation of God and the blessedness of the new life in Jesus and His Holy Spirit, the devil may try to deceive you that you can commit that sin and be restored again easily, but it may be quite impossible for you to regain your salvation back. The admonition here is if you been truly saved from sin, remain watchful and prayerful and don’t toil with sin, never yield to the deception of Satan of falling and rising at your wish, it is not biblical and may be impossible for you. Esau thought he could eat his bread and have it at the same time, he thought he could fall and rise at will, that he could sell his birthright and secure it at the same time; that is how Satan want us to think, that we can sink into sin and still stand at the same time, that we can gain something by sinful means and still use it for God's work, that when we get something in ungodly way, we should pay just our tithes and support God's work, and God will overlook and pardon us. Satan will suggest that you can commit the sexual immorality and after that go into fasting and prayer and God is merciful to forgive. Such never worked, not even for Esau. Bible warns us in Hebrews 12:16, 17, "lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears." Moses struck the rock twice in disobedience to the word of God, and the Lord said he would not enter the promise land, though Moses pleaded with God several times but it was impossible for him to enter that Promised Land. The judgment pronounced by God was never uttered, and so Moses died in the wilderness. The Bible says in the Book of Hebrews 10: 26, 27 “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” If God could not change His judgment during the time of Moses because of disobedience, how much more the judgment will be after Jesus Christ Himself had come to this world; died and rose for our sins, if we go against His word. Hebrews 10: 28, 29, says, “Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?” It’s deceptive and insulting the grace of God for a Christian to think he or she can freely and willingly go into sin and come back from it easily; it is licentious to think God is there to forgive you anytime and you are free to fall into sin anytime. The grace of God is not a license to commit sin or to live frivolous Christian life; rising and falling into sin is a sign of a Christian who has not gotten genuine salvation that gives victory over sin, and it is an evidence of life void of the grace of God that triumphs over sin. Romans 6:1, 2, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” Titus 2:11, 12, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.” ....this teaching continues in Part 2 If you will like to surrender your life to Jesus or rededicate your life to Jesus for a victorious Christian life, please click on this link, read it and pray as directed https://www.facebook.com/notes/revelation-of-truth-evangelical-ministries-rtem/how-to-be-saved-and-start-a-new-life-in-jesus/270674586372252 BEREA CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY ON WHATSAPP Join Berea WhatsApp Christian Community where we pray for one another, share the word of God together with counsel and helping one another, and sharing with children of God.
