A stunning and rare July 1966 Seiko Sportsmatic 5, featuring the dolphin caseback and a stunning silver dial. The Sportsmatic is the direct precursor to the Seiko 5 line, which went on to become one of the most successful mechanical watch series in history. The watch shows honest, age-appropriate wear (please refer to the photos) but remains in outstanding condition. It has benefited from a complete service and several recent updates, including a new crystal and a new beautiful leather band. It presents beautifully and keeps great time (see timegrapher readings in the listing). The case back has been lightly polished to maintain clarity while preserving the original engravings and medallion detail. Some minor wear marks remain, consistent with age. In terms of water resistance, it does have case gaskets, but this is a dress watch so don't go swimming in it. This Seiko Sportsmatic 5 represents an important chapter in horological history. In excellent and largely original condition (with the exception of the strap), it is a superb example that will appeal to the serious collector. The Price I list a fully restored watch with a completely disassembled and cleaned movement. There are many hours of my time put into getting the watch back into this condition through movement disassembly and servicing, case polishing etc. The price I ask is reasonable for the effort and condition it is presented in. It runs and presents like a new watch. If you feel inclined to send a lowball offer, please don't, I'll ignore it. Also note at this time I'm not taking on servicing for any other watches, my sole focus is restoration of Seiko vintage watches. Each watch undergoes a full mechanical strip-down, with the movement dismantled into its individual components. I include a photograph of the movement prior to cleaning so you can see the process for yourself. Every component is hand cleaned and then put through a machine wash to remove old oils and residue that build up over decades. The movement is then carefully rebuilt, lubricated to the correct specifications, adjusted, and regulated to ensure dependable operation and strong timekeeping performance. A Note on Vintage Mechanical Watches Owning a vintage mechanical watch is very different from owning a modern quartz timepiece. These watches were built in another era and should be appreciated for their craftsmanship, history, and character rather than absolute precision. Due to age, components can be more delicate than those found in contemporary watches. While perfectly functional, many collectors prefer to wear vintage pieces thoughtfully rather than as everyday, high-impact watches. A vintage watch of this age is something to enjoy, maintain, and preserve. Treated with care, a quality vintage watch can remain a rewarding and potentially appreciating asset for years to come. Buying With Confidence Your satisfaction is important to me. If there are any concerns after purchase, please get in touch and I will work with you to resolve the issue quickly and fairly. Please note that this watch has not been pressure tested, and water resistance cannot be guaranteed. It should be kept away from moisture. SEIKO 5 HISTORY First released in late 1963 the Original Seiko 5 is a modified SEIKO SPORTSMATIC. Seiko decided they needed an affordable watch that was versatile and durable. An everyday device that could handle a wide variety of different situations and environments. So was born the '5' concept. The '5' came from the 5 features they wanted to incorporate into the watch. These were: 1. Automatic winding 2. Day/date display 3. Water resistance 4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position 5. Integrated metal bracelet The '5' was an immediate success and has gone on to become the most successful line of mechanical watches in history. About Me: I’m an amateur watchmaker with a deep appreciation for classic Seiko timepieces, particularly the iconic 6619 series. I specialise in restoring neglected vintage Seikos—bringing tired movements, worn cases, and forgotten dials back to life with care and respect for their original character. My passion lies in preserving these pieces of horological history so they can be worn, appreciated, and collected for generations to come. Pickup from Camp Hill, cash only.
