Ad text
What if I told you dragons still stir in the mountain streams, strange and wondrous? The Eastern Hellbender hasn’t changed all that much in millions of years and is often called the living fossil. I like to imagine them sliding through the water like moving stones, deep in the darkness. Hunting at night under the moon, these shy salamanders spend much of their lives sheltering under rocks on the bottom of riverbeds. Nocturnal hunters, they eat crayfish, insects, and small fish. It’s hard to imagine a cooler name than “Hellbender,” but it has a few more: snot otter, devil dog, and even lasagna lizard! North America’s largest salamander, these little dragons can grow up to two feet long and breathe through their wrinkly skin (hence “lasagna lizard”). Because of this, they are also bioindicators of water quality, playing an important role in our river ecosystems. Males spend months protecting their eggs, fanning them with their tails to keep them oxygenated. Sediment poses one of the biggest threats to these wonderful creatures, and we can help their declining numbers by planting biodiverse gardens that hold precious soil and keep it out of our rivers. Raising awareness about this magnificent salamander is a great way to help protect them. Our Hellbender tee was created to be a conversation piece, we hope you get lots of “What’s a hellbender?” Hope you’re finding time for the mysterious wilds, Mary Founder/Artist Fist of Flora
