The room laughed. And Priscilla said — but we also learned a good lesson. There is always something you cannot see controlling what you can. And if you spend all your time hitting the puppets — popping the symptoms — exhausting yourself dealing with the things that keep coming back up in your marriage, in your mind, in your home, in your finances — if you spend your time and your money and your energy treating the symptoms — You will at best exhaust yourself. Without ever touching the root of where the real problem is stemming from. She said it from the stage in her own words. "There is an enemy. He is against you. He is not for you. He plans to do anything and everything in his power to stir up challenge in your life enough to cause you to shrink back." And then she said the thing that stopped me cold. She said — the enemy is scheming against you. Not just reacting to you. Scheming. He's been sitting back studying your tendencies and your patterns. He's been watching where you go and what you do. He's been looking into your history and your husband's history — trying to figure out the best combination to make explosions happen in your family. He's been looking into your children — trying to figure out the best way to divert them from the destiny God has assigned to them. He is not hoping to catch you off guard. He has been planning this. And Priscilla said — when I found out someone has not just done me wrong but has been planning to do me wrong? A holy indignation rises up. I am not going to stand back and let you run roughshod over my family. But here's the thing she says that most women miss. He says — don't go to war with flesh and blood. Don't go to war with your husband. Don't go to war with your boss. Don't go to war with the circumstances you can see. Because those are the puppets. The real fight is underneath the board. Between reading the words and having the truth wrapped around you as the foundation everything else hangs on. And deception — she said — has a blinding agent. When you're being deceived you can't tell. The person standing right at the edge of the precipice — everyone around them can see they're about to fall into a pit of despair. But the person can't see it. Because deception blinds you. And since there's a blinding agent — since you can't tell when you're being deceived — you need an objective standard outside yourself. Something you can hold up that tells you whether what you're seeing and feeling and believing is real. She said — you need an objective standard. You need the truth. And it needs to be wrapped around you so tightly that when the tide of culture changes and the philosophies shift and everyone around you is going a different direction — you know which way is up. That's the belt. But here's what most Christian women never figure out. You cannot put on a belt you don't understand. You can hold truth in your hands. You can carry it to church. You can have it on your nightstand. But if you open it and feel lost — if you read for twenty minutes and close it more confused than when you started — the belt isn't going on.
