I'm going to tell you the truth about the New Zealand tinnitus industry. And the truth is that your ears aren't broken. They're starving. I've worked with hair cell physiology for 28 years. I've seen the same pattern repeat thousands of times: a patient comes in with ringing in the ears, the doctor looks in the ear, notes that everything LOOKS normal, and sends the patient home with the words "you'll just have to learn to live with it." That answer isn't wrong. It's just not the whole truth. I decided early in my career to find out the rest. LARS Lars, 61, Auckland. Single since the divorce. Former sound engineer who toured with New Zealand bands in the 90s. It was 2.38 am on a Sunday morning in February when he sat at the kitchen table with his hands pressed hard against his temples and thought: "PLEASE, JUST FIVE MINUTES WITHOUT THIS." He'd had tinnitus since 2014. Twelve years. It started as a faint ringing after a concert in Wellington where he stood too close to the monitor. Now it was a constant, multi-toned hum that never stopped. Lars had tried everything. Ginkgo biloba in four rounds, total $560. Zinc tablets from the pharmacy, $89. B12 for six months. Magnesium. A sound masker for $320 that only worked while it was switched on. Hearing aids for $2,200 that amplified the ringing instead of damping it. His GP said it was from noise damage. That the hair cells were permanently destroyed. That there was nothing to be done. That was the story I refused to accept. I started digging. Not in treatment guides. In cell biology. And what I found changed everything I believed about tinnitus. The established narrative is that loud noise permanently destroys the hair cells. And that is partly true. BUT, and this is what no one tells you, research at Charité in Berlin (Khan et al., Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, 2007) was the FIRST study to examine whether tinnitus could be linked to low CoQ10 levels. Their finding: patients whose blood CoQ10 was low showed improvement when levels were restored. Not everyone. Those with low levels. Those whose cells were most starved. Think of a radio. An old radio with a battery. When the battery starts to run down, what happens isn't what you expect. The radio doesn't switch off. It starts making noise. Static noise. That noise, the constant background interference, that is your tinnitus. Every product Lars had tried tried to adjust the radio. Ginkgo tried to pump more blood to the cells, like pouring water into a machine that needs petrol. Zinc supported the nerves, but the nerves weren't the problem – the cells that fed the nerves were what had run out. The sound masker put a blanket over the noise. The hearing aids turned up the volume on everything, including the noise. No one. Changed. The battery. CoQ10 is in every cell's mitochondria. It is the electron carrier that sends electrons from complex I and II to complex III in the respiratory chain. Without it the cell can't make ATP. Without ATP the hair cells can't fire properly. Dr Peter Mitchell received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1978 for mapping exactly that process. Chemiosmotic coupling. What powers every cell in your body. And the hair cells, the most energy-demanding cells you have, they are hit FIRST. This is not a theory. It's called "COQ10 DEFICIENCY." It explains why ginkgo doesn't work – wrong fuel. It explains why zinc doesn't work – wrong target. It explains why masking devices only help temporarily – they hide the noise without addressing the dying radio. You need three things. At the same time. In the right order. First: restore the CoQ10 level in the starved hair cells. The body's own CoQ10 production drops by about 50 percent by age 50. Lars was 61. His cells had been running on empty for years. Then: deliver CoQ10 in its pre-activated form, ubiquinol. The cheaper form, ubiquinone, has to be converted by the body first. That conversion ability declines with age. Ubiquinol skips that step. Finally: give it at least six weeks. The research showed six weeks. Not three days. You need all three. At the same time. In the right order. I searched for a long time. I found a product that met all three requirements. It's called Qoreva™. I didn't develop it. I have no ownership stake. But I reviewed the formulation, the doses, and the reference studies carefully. The RCT that supports it, published in the Iranian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology (2025, 50 participants), shows a reduction on the tinnitus scale of 17.2 points versus 4.56 for placebo. Statistically significant. P-value under 0.001. The sleep improvement was even stronger. When I started recommending it I was met with silence. ENT clinics that don't want to question their own routines. A hearing-aid industry that globally turns over more than $100 billion a year and whose business model is built on selling devices, not on addressing the root cause. The system doesn't make money from an energy molecule that costs a fraction. But this isn't about the system. It's about Lars. He took it for six weeks. The first days nothing happened. Week two he told me he'd slept right through the night without waking from the hum. That hadn't happened since 2017. Week six he said: "It's not gone. But it's as if someone turned the volume down by half. I can hear the silence again." I can hear the silence again. From a man who hadn't heard it for twelve years. Over 22,000 people have tried it. It doesn't work for everyone. I say that straight out. But for those whose cells are starving, and that's more people than you think, there is an explanation the ENT system never gave them. I sell nothing. I get no commission. I don't sit on their board. I'm not on their payroll. I am an audiologist. And I refuse to stay silent about what I know. Read the article.
