Area residents and visitors are invited to step behind the scenes of local agriculture during the 2nd Annual Chenango County Open Farm Day. Hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County, the event will take place on Saturday, July 18th, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Participating farms, agricultural businesses, and historical institutions across the region will open their gates to the public for a day of free, self-guided tours, interactive demonstrations, and family-friendly activities. Organized to bridge the gap between consumers and local producers, Open Farm Day shines a spotlight on the diverse agricultural landscape of the region. This year’s driving tour features specialized livestock operations like Ryan's Yak Farm alongside traditional crop and livestock homesteads such as Berry Brae Farm, Penwingle Farm, and Fox Trail Farm. Visitors looking for unique regional goods can also explore artisanal production stops, including the fragrant fields of Hillcrest Lavender Farm, the active hives at Kutiks' Honey Bees, and the wood-fired sugarhouse at Cooks' Maple. Educational and environmental discovery takes center stage at the Rogers Environmental Education Center. Families can make a dedicated stop to explore active pollinator gardens and participate in hands-on conservation programs that connect local wildlife ecosystems to working agriculture. Additionally, visitors can immerse themselves in area heritage at the Chenango County Historical Society & Museum and learn about the logistical supply networks that move food from fields to shelves with Mid York Distributors LLC.A major anchor of this year's tour is the Chenango County Dairy Day festival hub. This central location serves as a collaborative showcase bringing together numerous regional operations in a single stop. Visitors at Dairy Day can meet the official Dairy Ambassadors, engage with standout local producers like Schmidt's Scattered Maples and Fairchild Family Farms, and explore sustainable farm technology through the Cornell Energy Program and CCE Chenango. The economic and cultural impact of the industry is highlighted by the inclusion of global dairy innovator Chobani and the Chenango County Farm Bureau. Their presence underscores the power of large-scale production and regional agricultural advocacy in the Upstate New York community. The next generation of regional farming will also be on full display at the festival hub. Chenango County 4-H will host interactive youth activities, agricultural project displays, and leadership skill showcases throughout the day. Admission to all locations is entirely free, making it an accessible day of discovery for everyone.
