Mr. Du was already in the late stages of cancer when they made the donation; his wife, Ms. Lu Suying, also suffered from heart failure. In their final years, with no children of their own, they chose to entrust their entire legacy to children they would never meet. Mr. Du passed away peacefully in June 2018. Ms. Lu followed in August 2025, at the age of 92. In the spring of 2026, as they had wished, their ashes were scattered at sea.
